Rutledge was a member of the Continental Congress from South Carolina (1774-1776, 1782-1783), a judge on the South Carolina Court of Chancery (from 1784), a member of the state legislature (1784-1790) and was appointed chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1795).

John Rutledge was Governor of South Carolina (Jul. 1776-Mar. 1778; Jan. 1779-Jan. 1782), Associate Justice (1789-1791) and Chief Justice (Jul. 1795-Dec. 1795) of the U.S. Supreme Court. He was a delegate to the U.S. Constitutional Convention and signer of the U.S. Constitution.

Edward Rutledge, eldest brother of John, was a signer of the U.S. Declaration of Independence for South Carolina and Governor of South Carolina (Dec. 1798-Jan. 1800).
