In 1917, Julius Rosenwald (1862-1932), President of Sears, Roebuck and Company, initiated the Julius Rosenwald Foundation. Through this program, more than 5300 schools, shop buildings, and teachers' houses were built by, and for, African-Americans across the South and Southwest until the program was discontinued in 1932.

The Rosenwald Plan called for African Americans to participate in the building of schools in their communities, including land acquisition, fund raising, school management, and curriculum. Working together, African Americans built about 500 Rosenwald schools in South Carolina, the third highest number in the country. Many of the schools operated until desegregation in the early 1970s.
