• 1859, Sept. 18: Born, Omaha, Neb.
• 1881: Graduated, law department, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich.
• 1882: Admitted to the bar, Omaha, Neb.
• 1885: Established and edited the Omaha Evening World
• 1889: Purchased the Nebraska Morning Herald and consolidated it into the Morning and Evening World Herald
• 1898: Ran unsuccessfully as Democratic candidate for Congress
• 1903 - 1905 : United States representative from Nebraska
• 1911 - 1923 : United States senator from Nebraska
• 1922: Ran unsuccessfully for United States Senate
• 1930: Ran unsuccessfully for United States Senate
• 1933: Retired from newspaper business and moved to Washington, D.C.
• 1934, Feb. 3: Died, Washington, D.C.
