Governor's Day was an annual occasion for honoring ROTC cadets. In 1970, students that opposed the war in Vietnam held a peace rally the same day, and distributed flyers and posters on campus announcing the rally and opposition to the Governor's Day observances.

In 1970/71, the Oral History Program at the University of Nevada and the University Archives initiated a program to interview prominent members of the University community to comment on the previous year. The objective was to present a picture of the past year as observed by students, faculty, and others who were involved and concerned with the University. Among those interviewed were chairs of the Board of Regents, Faculty Senate, various faculty committees and boards, members of the Alumni Association, as well as student leaders including editors of the school newspaper, elected student officials, and leaders in student organizations and clubs. Not only were specific events covered, but also general trends affecting the University and higher education throughout the country. The project ended with the 1973-74 school year.

The University of Nevada began in Elko, Nevada, but never attracted more than thirty-five students in a single year. In 1885, the legislature made arrangements for moving the institution to Reno. In August 1885, they broke ground for the first university building in Reno, the future Morrill Hall, which was completed in 1886.

Governor's Day was an annual occasion for honoring ROTC cadets. In 1970, students that opposed the war in Vietnam held a peace rally the same day, May 5, 1970, disrupting the proceedings. A substantial segment of the community was outraged, and voiced their disapproval to the university President, N. Edd Miller, with letters and petitions calling for the discharge of faculty that urged and directed the disruption and the expulsion of students that participated.

Mackay Day is an annual celebration held over a period of a week in honor of the Mackay family, early benefactors of the University. In 1949, the students, under the direction of English professor William C. Miller, presented a melodrama, The Psychoscope, as part of the Mackay Day events. Written in 1871 by R.M. Daggett and J.T. Goodman, editors of the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise, it was first performed at Piper's Opera House in Virginia City, Nevada.
