Milo G. Derham, who received his B.A. from Cornell College in 1892 and his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado in 1904, was director of the university's summer school from 1913 to 1929 when he was made its dean, a post which he held until his retirement in 1937. Derham's 34 years of service at the university had begun in 1903 with his appointment as assistant instructor in Latin. He was named the head of the department of classics in 1920. He died in April 1949.
Under Derham's leadership, the enrollment of the summer quarter grew from 385 to several thousand in 1937 when, as professor emeritus of classics and dean emeritus of the summer school, he retired. Under Derham's administration, the summer school operated without state appropriations and it inaugurated a writers' conference in 1930 which offered professional training by experienced writers, many of them of national renown.
