In 1898, a group of Texas school teachers established the Texas-Colorado Chautauqua Association in Boulder. The Colorado Chautauqua followed the pattern of the original Chautauqua founded in 1874 by Dr. John H. Vincent and Lewis Miller on the shores of Lake Chautauqua, New York. The Boulder assembly combined programs of popular education, entertainment and religious instruction with a system of home study courses in a relaxed summer school setting.
In 1900, the assembly was reorganized as the Colorado Chautauqua Association. Each summer a wide variety of lecturers, speakers and entertainers appeared at the Chautauqua. The Chautauqua summer school, which was organized into an academy, an institute and a lyceum, sought to meet the public's demand for popular education in a resort atmosphere.
Various groups made regular use of the Chautauqua for their assemblies. The headquarters of the Rocky Mountain Climbers Club was at the Chautauqua, and the club worked closely with the association.
