John Davis Washburn (1833-1903) was the son of John Marshall Washburn of Boston and Lancaster, Mass. The younger Washburn graduated from Harvard College in 1853 and Harvard Law School in 1856. He practiced law in Worcester, was active in the insurance business, served in the Massachusetts state legislature, and was appointed consul general to Switzerland in 1889. In 1860 he married Mary Flagg Putnam ( - ).
