Leslie Richard Groves (1896-1970) was born in Albany, New York. He received his commission in the Corps of Engineers from West Point in 1918, and later graduated from the Command and General Staff School in 1936, and then the Army War College in 1939. He achieved the rank of brigadier general in September 1942. He served as head of the Manhattan Engineer District, America's atomic bomb development project that led to the explosion of the first nuclear device at Alamogordo, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945. After World War II, he served with the Army's Special Weapons Project in 1947 and 1948. He retired as lieutenant general in February 1948.
