Biographical History
Born in England, George Henry Boughton grew up in New York State but returned to England and made his reputation there. Boughton was elected to the Royal Academy of Art and known for his genre scenes of peasant life in Italy and for his illustrations to histories and romances of early New England. Boughton illustrated Washington Irving's History of New York (1886) and Hawthorne's The scarlet letter (1908) for the Grolier Club.
