Maietta, Julia L. (Julia Luigia), 1909-1994
Variant namesJulia Luigia Maietta (1909-1994), of Curwensville, Pa., worked in a shirt factory in her hometown, and became active in the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America union. She served as a National Representative for the ACWA and as Field Service Coordinator for the AFL-CIO Committee on Political Education (COPE). Maietta ran in and won the Democratic primary for the 22nd Congressional District but lost the election in 1948 and 1958. Maietta remained active in electoral politics and government at both the state and national levels. She was a delegate to the National Democratic Conventions of 1964, 1968, 1972, and 1980; in 1972 she was appointed to the National Democratic Charter Commission. Maietta was appointed Assistant Page for the Pennsylvania Electoral College of 1976, and also served on the AFL-CIO Committee on Political Education and as Director of the Women's Activities Department. She became a key labor lobbyist in Harrisburg, Pa. and Washington, D.C. She was appointed to the Pennsylvania Commission for Women in 1975 for two consecutive two-year terms (and was appointed again in 1981).
