Spanish Merchants Association of Philadelphia
The Spanish Merchants Company was established by the Spanish Merchants Association of Philadelphia to distribute milk to Spanish-speaking grocers. It was the first minority milk cooperative to act as a subdealer with its own license not subject to price controls of the Pennsylvania Milk Marketing Board. Profits were paid out to shareholders in quarterly dividends.

The Spanish Merchants Association of Philadelphia was a private, not-for-profit organization which promoted commercial and economic development activities on behalf of Puerto Ricans and Latinos in the city from 1969-1988.

In 1980 the Spanish Merchants Association joined with a private developer to form the Economic Development Association, the purpose of which was to develop housing and employment opportunities for the Spanish-speaking in North Philadelphia.

In 1978 the Spanish Merchants Association received a planning grant from the U.S. Community Services Administration and the City of Philadelphia to develop programs designed to stimulate the economic revitalization of a largely Spanish-speaking area of North Philadelphia. The association employed the Philadelphia Urban Coalition as subcontractor to investigate the feasibility of programs, assess community needs, survey prospective users of services, and produce a proposal for implementing programs in the targeted areas.
