Stanford Historical Society

The Stanford Historical Society was founded in 1976 to encourage the study and understanding of Stanford University's history and the ideals of the University's founders.

In 1861, the same year he was elected governor of California, Leland Stanford purchased the former Shelton C. Fogus mansion in Sacramento. Over the years, Jane and Leland Stanford substantially enlarged the house. It remained one of the Stanford's residences until 1900, when Jane Stanford gave it to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento to be used as an orphanage.

Stevens earned her a.b. and M.A. in physiology at Stanford University, 1899 and 1900. She entered Bryn Mawr as a graduate scholar in biology in 1900, pursued studies in Naples and Wurzburg during 1901-1902, and received her Ph.D. in June 1903. She remained affiliated with Bryn Mawr, doing research on the chromosomal determination of sex and other topics. She died in May 1912.
