Air Defense Committee (1936) Head of the Physics Department at Imperial College, London (1953-1965); Professor Emeritus and Senior Research Fellow, 1965-1974. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1948 for his work on particle disintegration and cosmic rays. He was appointed to the Order of Merit in 1967 and received a Life Peerage in 1969.
