The Pemberton Chemical Company, which developed and marketed a soft drink named "Coca-Cola," was acquired (1888) by Asa Griggs Candler, who became sole owner in 1891. The company opened a branch factory in Dallas, Texas (1894), and its own building in Atlanta, Georgia (1898). Ernest Woodruff led a group of investors who acquired the Coca-Cola Company in 1919. The first bottling plant opened in Chattanooga, Tennessee (1899). The company markets its products world-wide and became diversified into other food and non-food operations beginning in the 1960s.
