Joseph W. Jones was born on October 9, 1912 in Georgetown, Delaware. He graduated from Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, Delaware in 1932. He joined the Coca-Cola Export Corporation and transferred over to a job at the Coca-Cola Company two years later. Robert W. Woodruff, the head of the Coca-Company Company, chose Jones to be his assistant in 1946. Over the next four decades, Jones worked as Woodruff's chief of staff and his executive aide. During this time, he played an indispensible role in Woodruff's daily life. Woodruff referred to Jones as his "most trusted business associate."
