In 1970/71, the Oral History Program at the University of Nevada and the University Archives initiated a program to interview prominent members of the University community to comment on the previous year. The objective was to present a picture of the past year as observed by students, faculty, and others who were involved and concerned with the University. Among those interviewed were chairs of the Board of Regents, Faculty Senate, various faculty committees and boards, members of the Alumni Association, as well as student leaders including editors of the school newspaper, elected student officials, and leaders in student organizations and clubs. Not only were specific events covered, but also general trends affecting the University and higher education throughout the country. The project ended with the 1973-74 school year.

A substantial segment of the community was outraged, and voiced their disapproval to the university President, N. Edd Miller, with letters and petitions calling for the discharge of faculty that urged and directed the disruption and the expulsion of students that participated.
