Charles Devens, Jr. was a Union army officer in the Civil War. He entered the war as a Major in the 3rd Batallion of the Massachusetts Rifles. He was appointed Brigadier General in April 1862 and was brevetted Major General, United States Volunteers, in April 1865. After the war, he served as a State Supreme Court justice for Massachusetts and was appointed Attorney General of the United States.
