Biographical notes:

Francis Julius LeMoyne, physician and abolitionist, was born on 4 Sept. 1798. He married Madeleine Romaine Bureau in 1823; they had eight children. LeMoyne died on 14 Oct. 1879.

LeMoyne graduated from Washington College in 1815, studied medicine with his father, and then received an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1823. He practiced medicine in Washington, Pa., until his retirement in 1853. During the 1830s, LeMoyne was active in the abolitionist movement. He became the first American to promote cremation and built the first crematorium in the country in 1876.
