Chicago lawyer and congressman.
John Valcoulon LeMoyne was born in 1828 in Washington, Penn., to Madeline Romaine Bureau LeMoyne and Francis Julius LeMoyne. His father, a well-known abolitionist, was a vice presidential candidate of the Liberty Party and later erected the first crematorium in the U.S. near Washington, Penn. John LeMoyne studied law in Pittsburgh and was admitted to the bar in 1852. Early that same year he toured the West, determining to settle in Chicago and practice law. Defeated in an 1872 run for Congress, LeMoyne ran again in 1876 and served for approximately one year. He continued to practice law in Chicago and retired to Baltimore, Md., in 1887.
