Edward Palmer (1831-1911) was born on January 12, 1831, in Norfolk, England. He came to the United States at the age of eighteen and settled in Cleveland, Ohio. There he met Dr. Jared Kirkland, one of the most eminent scientists of that day. From him, Palmer learned about collecting and preserving objects of natural history. He did most of his collecting in Mexico; his last collecting trip was to the vicinity of Tampico, on the Gulf of Mexico in 1910. He collected extensively for the United States Department of Agriculture and the United States National Museum between 1869 and 1910. He was honored by the Botanical Society of Washington on January 12, 1911, his 80th birthday. He died three months later.

Edward Palmer was an Acting Assistant Surgeon in the U. S. Army, and was later employed by the U. S. Dept. of Agriculture from 1865-1889. He was an amateur ethnologist, anthropologist, geologist and meteorologist.

Edward Palmer served as acting Assistant Surgeon, U.S. Army, during the Civil War. He was stationed at various posts, including Fort Whipple in Arizona. He was also a botanist and amateur anthropologist.

Palmer was born in England in 1831 and emigrated to the United States at the age of 18. He was appointed to Captain Page's Water Witch Expedition to Paraguay (1853) as botanical collector; then participated in the Geological Survey of California, collecting marine invertebrates and other zoological, archeological and botanical specimens for a variety of patrons. He made numerous botanical collecting trips to Mexico between 1878 and 1910.
