Biographical notes:

Prominent politician of the Democratic Party during Iowa's early days as a state. Dodge was a supporter of the Homestead Bill, Compromise Bill of 1850, anti-slavery legislation, and temperance. He served 3 terms as a congressional representative (1840-1846) before becoming one of Iowa's first 2 senators. In 1839 he was appointed by Governor Lucas to be the brigadier-general of the Second Brigade of the First Division of the militia of the Iowa territory. In 1838 Dodge was appointed Register of the United States Land Office in Burlington, where he spent much of the rest of his life. In 1855 he resigned his senate position to accept an appointment by President Pierce to be the Minister Plenipotentiary to the Court of Spain. In 1859 he ran unsuccessfully for governor against Samuel J. Kirkwood. In 1874 he was elected mayor of Burlington. In 1883 he presided over the semi-centennial celebration of the settlement of Iowa.

Augustus Caesar Dodge was one of the first two United States Senators to represent the state of Iowa after it was admitted to the Union as a state in 1846. Dodge served in the Senate from 1846 to 1855. He was a member of the Democratic Party.
