Mazzei was an Italian physician, merchant, and horticulturist, who lived in London as a wine merchant before moving to Virginia in 1773. He introduced grapes, olives, and other fruits on a plantation near Monticello, and became an active supporter of the revolutionary movement in Virginia. He served as an agent in Europe for the Commonwealth of Virginia, and later became a chargé d'affaires for King Stanislaus of Poland.
