Hallam Tennyson, son of the poet Alfred Tennyson, was the second Baron Tennyson. Educated at home by doting parents, he attended Trinity College and was admitted to the Inner Temple. Although he published some poetry and other literary efforts, he soon became an important part of his father's life, acting as secretary, amanuensis, confidant, and caretaker. After the elder Tennyson's death, Hallam sifted through his father's letters and wrote a biography, after which about three-quarters of the letters were destroyed. Later, he served with distinction as governor-general of Australia, and remained active in government after his return to England, as well as editing a collection of his father's poems and writing a memoir.

Son of Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron and Poet Laureate. Was Governor and Commander-in-chief of South Australia 1899-July 1902. After this he became Acting Governor-General then Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia until his return to England in 1904. In 1905 became Privy Councillor, and in 1913 Deputy Governor of the Isle of Wight.

Hallam Tennyson, 2nd Baron Tennyson (11 August 1852-2 December 1928), second Governor-General of Australia, was born at Chapel House, Twickenham, in Surrey, England. He was the elder son of Alfred Tennyson, the most popular and prominent poet of late Victorian England.
Hallam was educated at Marlborough College and Trinity College, Cambridge, but his career aspirations ended when his parents' age and ill-health obliged him to leave Cambridge to become their personal secretary. The idea of going into politics was also abandoned.
It was partly for Hallam's benefit that Alfred Tennyson accepted a peerage in 1884, the year Hallam married Audrey Boyle (after being disappointed in his love for Mary Gladstone, daughter of William Ewart Gladstone). On his father's death in 1892, he inherited the title Baron Tennyson, and also the role of official biographer. His Tennyson: a Memoir was published in 1897.
