English children's author/illustrator, born in Chester, Cheshire, England. Since 1938, the American Library Association annually has awarded the Caldecott Medal in his honor for "most distinguished American picture book for children in the United States published during the preceding year."

Randolph Caldecott was initially a bank clerk, who studied art in his spare time. He soon became known for his paintings and illustrations, especially his dynamic line drawings and rich watercolors. He is probably best remembered for his innovative and influential series of illustrated children's books, setting nursery rhymes in the English countryside with bold, active drawings full of humor. He was also a model maker. The Caldecott Medal for children's book illustration is named in his honor.

Randolph J. Caldecott was born in Cheshire, England. He first worked in banks in Shropshire and Manchester, but moved to London and became a freelance artist and illustrator in 1872. In 1875, "Old Christmas" firmly established Caldecott's reputation. The Caldecott Medal, an award for the "most distinguished American picture book for children" was named in tribute to Caldecott.

Famed artist and illustrator Randolph Caldecott was born in Chester, England in 1846. He attended the Manchester School of Art and worked in banks before moving to London to begin his career as a free-lance illustrator.

Since 1938 the prestigious Caldecott Medal has been awarded annually to the illustrator of the best children's picture book published in the United States during the previous year.
