Robert E. Peary was born in Cresson, Pennsylvania. As a member of the U.S. Navy Civil Engineering Corps, he explored the Arctic regions of Greenland. He led the first expedition to reach the North Pole.

Robert E. Peary was born in Cresson, Pa., grew up in Maine, graduated from Bowdoin College, 1877, and worked as a surveyor, then as a civil engineer for the United States Navy. He began his explorations of Greenland and the Arctic regions in the 1880s. He claimed, and was credited with, discovery of the North Pole, a claim that has since been discredited.
