Plaisted, Ralph (Ralph Summers), 1927-2008
Variant namesRalph Summers Plaisted (b. Sept. 30, 1927, Brunno, Minn.–d. Sept. 8, 2008, Wyoming, Minn.) was an insurance salesman turned Arctic explorer. He, with Walt Pederson, Gerry Pitzl and Jean-Luc Bombardier, were the first explorers to succeed in a surface traverse across the ice to the North Pole on April 19, 1968, making the first confirmed surface conquest of the Pole.
