Biographical Note: Charles Rockwell Lanman was a college professor at The Johns Hopkins University and Harvard University.

He was born July 8, 1850 in Norwich CT, received his B.A. (1871) and his Ph. D. (1873) from Yale University. In 1876, he came to The Johns Hopkins University as a post-doctoral fellow and taught a course in Sanskrit. He was appointed assistant professor of Sanskrit in the Dept. of Philology in 1878, and associate professor in 1879. Lanman accepted a position at Harvard as full professor of philology in 1880. Lanman died in 1941.
