John Laurens (October 28, 1754 – August 27, 1782) was an American soldier and statesman from South Carolina during the American Revolutionary War, best known for his criticism of slavery and his efforts to help recruit slaves to fight for their freedom as U.S. soldiers.[1] In 1779, Laurens gained approval from the Continental Congress for his plan to recruit a brigade of 3,000 slaves by promising them freedom in return for fighting. The plan was defeated by political opposition in South Carolina. Laurens was killed in the Battle of the Combahee River in August 1782. In 1779, Laurens gained approval from the Continental Congress for his plan to recruit a brigade of 3,000 slaves by promising them freedom in return for fighting. The plan was defeated by political opposition in South Carolina. Laurens was killed in the Battle of the Combahee River in August 1782. In October 1771, Laurens's father moved with his sons to London, and Laurens was educated in Europe from the ages of 16 to 22. For two years beginning in June 1772, he and one brother attended school in Geneva, Switzerland, where they lived with a family friend.[2] On October 26, 1776, Laurens married Martha Manning, the daughter of a mentor and family friend.[4] Laurens's brother-in-law was William Manning, Governor of the Bank of England and Member of Parliament. Laurens remained determined to join the Continental Army and fight for his country, rather than to complete law school in England and raise a family there. He embarked for Charleston in December 1776, leaving his pregnant wife behind in London with her family.[4] In 1780, Laurens was elected a member to the American Philosophical Society.[5] Two days after the Battle of Germantown, on October 6, 1777, he was given his official appointment as one of General Washington's aides-de-camp, and was commissioned with the rank of lieutenant colonel.[6] From November 2 to December 11, 1777, Washington and several aides, including Laurens, were quartered at the Emlen House, north of Philadelphia in Camp Hill, which served as Washington's headquarters through the Battle of White Marsh. As the British stepped up operations in the South, Laurens promoted the idea of arming slaves and granting them freedom in return for their service. He had written, "We Americans at least in the Southern Colonies, cannot contend with a good Grace, for Liberty, until we shall have enfranchised our Slaves." Laurens was set apart from other leaders in Revolutionary-era South Carolina by his belief that black and white people shared a similar nature and could aspire to freedom in a republican society.[1] In early 1778, Laurens advised his father, who was then the President of the Continental Congress, to use forty slaves he stood to inherit as part of a brigade. Henry Laurens granted the request, but with reservations that caused postponement of the project. Congress approved the concept of a regiment of slaves in March 1779, and sent Laurens south to recruit a regiment of 3,000 black soldiers; however, the plan was opposed, and Laurens was ultimately unsuccessful. Having won election to the South Carolina House of Representatives, Laurens introduced his black regiment plan in 1779, again in 1780, and a third time in 1782, meeting overwhelming rejection each time. Governor John Rutledge and General Christopher Gadsden were among the opponents. Laurens was taken prisoner by the British in May 1780, after the fall of Charleston. As a prisoner of war, he was shipped to Philadelphia, where he was paroled with the condition that he would not leave Pennsylvania. Upon his release, Laurens was unwillingly appointed by Congress in December 1780 as a special minister to France In March 1781, Laurens and Thomas Paine arrived in France to assist Benjamin Franklin, who had been serving as the American minister in Paris since 1777.[16] Together, they met with King Louis XVI, among others. Laurens gained French assurances that French ships would support American operations that year; the promised naval support was later to prove invaluable at the Siege of Yorktown. On August 27, 1782, at the age of 27, Laurens was shot from his saddle during the Battle of the Combahee River, as one of the last casualties of the Revolutionary War. Laurens died in what General Greene described sadly as "a paltry little skirmish" with a foraging party,[19] only a few weeks before the British finally withdrew from Charleston.[20] Shortly after his marriage, while in Washington's camp, Laurens met and became extremely close friends with Alexander Hamilton. They exchanged many letters during the several years when different assignments and Laurens's capture by the British kept them apart; for example, when the terms of Laurens's parole prevented him from being present at Hamilton's wedding to Elizabeth Schuyler in December 1780, even though Hamilton had invited him.

Franklin-Bache Papers, 1707-1799
Title:
Franklin-Bache Papers 1707-1799
Containing over 4 linear feet of letters and documents, the Franklin-Bache Papers comprises the second largest collection of letters and documents relating to Benjamin Franklin in the APS Library. Although the scope of the collection is broad, including materials from the time of Franklin's arrival in Philadelphia to his death, the heart of the collection documents the period of Franklin's ministry in France (1776-1785) and his diplomatic efforts to win financial and military support for the revolutionary cause, as well as less intensive coverage of his ministry in England before the Revolution. Franklin's correspondence with American and French officials, financiers (personal and otherwise), and savants provides tantalizing details on the social context of Franklin's ministry in France, his intellectual life, and his growing celebrity. Much of the correspondence documents the efforts to convince French officials early in the war to support the American cause, but there is valuable material relating to the peace negotiations as well. The collection is equally rich in personal correspondence, including a rich set of letters from Mary Stevenson Hewson, Georgiana Shipley, Catherine Ray Greene, Jane Mecom, Deborah Franklin, and a number of Franklin's other relatives. The collection is arranged chronologically.

Committee Papers of the Committee on Revolutionary Claims, 1832–1897
Title:
Committee Papers of the Committee on Revolutionary Claims, 1832–1897
This series consists of reports, legislative case files, correspondence, and petitions and memorials created by or referred to the Committee on Revolutionary Claims. The committee reports and papers, 1837-1847, consist largely of original and printed committee reports on bills, petitions, and memorials referred to the committee, but also contain some documents supporting claims. The legislative case files, 1853-1897, with gaps, consist of a small number of legislative case files from fewer than one-third of the Congresses between 1853 and 1897. The petitions and memorials, 1832-1897, include supporting documentation. The supporting documentation for claims includes a number of documents dating from the Revolutionary War period, 1774-1781, and other evidentiary documents that predate by dozens of years the petition or bill concerning the claim. The Revolutionary War documents include such military records as muster rolls, commission certificates, letters from superior or fellow officers supporting claims by verifying service, and more personal documents such as letters from family members and, in at least one instance, a will. A few claims concern prominent military and political figures, either directly and indirectly. For example, claims of the widows or other legal heirs of John Laurens (SEN23A-G16), Alexander Hamilton (SEN25A-D17), Silas Deane (SEN26A-D16), Baron Johann deKalb (SEN26A-G18), Nathanael Greene (SEN33A-H21), and Ethan Allen (SEN34A-H21) are documented, at least in part, by these records. Among the records of claims of lesser figures are documents written by Revolutionary leaders. For example, the claim of the heirs of Major Tarlton Woodson (SEN25A-D17) for commutation pay includes items signed by Patrick Henry, Alexander Hamilton, John Laurens, and John Randolph. A sampling of memorials and their accompanying Revolutionary War-era documents found in the records of the committee reveals the memorial of representatives of John Brooks, a captain in the Continental Army, which is accompanied by the letter from General Horatio Gates appointing Brooks "town major" of York, Pennsylvania, (SEN29A-G21); the memorial of Burnett W. Dole, son of Enoch Dole, an Army surgeon from Massachusetts, accompanied by papers dated 1776 (SEN36A-H17); and the memorial of the heirs of John Arndt of Northampton County, Pennsylvania, which includes his officer's commission and original receipts for money advanced to his men (SEN43A-H25). In addition to pensions and commutation pay, some claimants sought compensation for nonmilitary services provided during the Revolution, and for damages to property as a result of military action. Claims for damages did not usually receive sympathetic hearing by the committee, but in the case of the claims for nonmilitary services, bills were sometimes reported favorably. The best documented of these claims was that of the heirs of Haym M. Salomon. Salomon served as paymaster to the French and handled the subsidies provided by the French and Dutch. The records supporting his claim include "statements of financial affairs of the United States, February 1781-September 1789," numerous letters and other accounts, and several printed items (SEN38A-E13, SEN41A-H23). Claims of Anna C. DeNeufville Evans, granddaughter of Amsterdam merchant and war financier John (Jean) DeNeufville (SEN32A-H21) and legal representative of James Bell of Canada (SEN36A-H17) also concern financing the war.

William Temple Franklin Papers, 1775-1819
Title:
William Temple Franklin Papers 1775-1819
The son of William Franklin, Royal Governor of New Jersey, William Temple Franklin worked as aide to his grandfather, Benjamin Franklin, when the latter served as minister to France during the American Revolution. A bonvivant, Temple received his highest public appointment as Secretary to the American delegation at the Treaty of Versailles in 1782-1783, largely through the influence of his famous grandfather, but never again attained a significant post. As Franklin's literary heir, he edited and published a three volume set of his grandfather's writings in 1817. He married his long time mistress a few months before his death in Paris in 1823. The William Temple Franklin Papers provides a richly detailed portrait of the life of the grandson of Benjamin Franklin, and consists largely of letters received during the years that Temple served as his grandfather's aide in France, 1776-1785. Although much of the correspondence is routine, during this period, Temple received regular reports from friends and diplomatic colleagues relaying information on the American Revolution, the course of diplomatic and peace negotiations, and French public opinion on Benjamin Franklin and the new United States. The collection is also a rich resource for information on the personal lives of the Franklins, including interesting correspondence from Temple's relatives William Franklin, Elizabeth Franklin, Sarah Franklin Bache, and Jonathan Williams, and his mistress Blanchette Caillot.

Letters Received from Commissioned Officers Below the Rank of Commander and from Warrant Officers, 1802–1886
Title:
Letters Received from Commissioned Officers Below the Rank of Commander and from Warrant Officers, 1802–1886
This series consists of letters from lieutenants, lieutenant commanders, ensigns, assistant surgeons, pursers, paymasters, chaplains, and professors of mathematics holding commissions as regular or volunteer officers of the U.S. Navy, boatswains, sailmakers, coopers, carpenters, gunners, and engineers. Letters for the period 1802-1807 include reports from lieutenants assigned to the command of gunboats and other vessels that were part of the American fleet in the Mediterranean. Prior to 1862 there are letters from officers holding warrants as midshipmen and during the Civil War period there are letters from masters and mates. A supplemental volume for 1884 has some letters from higher ranking officers, including the Colonel Commandant of the Marine Corps; and there are a few letters from officers of higher rank in other volumes. Many of the letters concern administrative and personnel matters, such as orders for duty, leave or furlough, pay, desertions, resignation, general courts-martial, health, and the settlement of accounts. Letters also include descriptions of naval engagements, epidemics, reports of captures, reports of delays in sailing, arrivals in port, and repairs performed on vessels. After 1865 the Office of Detail, a division of the Bureau of Navigation, handled many of the matters concerning duty assignments and leave for commissioned officers and received the letters from officers on these subjects. There are also post-1860 reports of services performed by chaplains. Among the letters received relating to naval operations are reports of captures of enemy vessels received from lieutenants in command of or assigned to vessels in the Mediterranean during the war with Tripoli and on the Great Lakes or in the Atlantic during the War of 1812. Also included are Lt. John McLaughlin's reports of Indian hostilities during the second Florida Indian War, 1839-1842. A number of letters contain reports from lieutenants and passed midshipmen who led or participated in exploring relief expeditions during the period 1839-1884. Scientific matters are the subjects of letters received from officers assigned to the Depot of Charts and Instruments, the Naval Observatory, and the Nautical Almanac Office during the 1830s, 1840s, and 1850s. Reports of local political conditions in various parts of Latin America, particularly Mexico, are included in letters dated immediately before and after the Mexican War of 1846-1848. Among the letters are reports of Lt. C. G. Hunter from Trieste on the movements of the combined fleet of Sardinia and Naples and the Austrian Army in June 1848 and a letter of April 23, 1850, from Lt. Thomas J. Page describing conditions in China after the death of Emperor Tao-kuang. Also, lieutenants who traveled to various parts of Europe submitted lengthy reports of their observations of foreign naval vessels and shipyards upon their return to the country. Enclosures in the form of returns, lists, muster rolls, drawings, and maps are located with some of the letters, and there are some telegrams after 1850.

ALS, November 10, 1825, by Marquis de Lafayette, memorial to Lt. Col. John Laurens, La Grange [South Carolina].
A memorial to Lt. Col. John Laurens, son of the President of the U.S. Congress, whose Revolutionary War career ended when he was killed in a minor action at Combahee Ferry, S.C., at the war's end, 27 August 1782. Lafayette writes, " ... John Laurens ... has been an honor to his country and an honor to mankind." ... "The brilliant, devoted, and steady services of Col. Laurens in our Revolutionary struggle are so conspicuously connected with the history of American independence and freedom that a minute account of his civil, military and political career would be superfluous ..."
