Title: William F. Prioleau papers, 1901-1994.

Papers, photographs, bound volumes, and political memorablia relating to the work and personal life of William F. Prioleau (1891-1966) and his son, William F. "Buddy" Prioleau (1922-1997), both of whom were residents of Columbia, S.C. The elder Prioleau served as a South Carolina state agent for Aetna Insurance Company; papers relating to his career include correspondence with business associates, his personal income tax returns, and American Red Cross membership cards. The younger Prioleau served as legal counsel to three South Carolina governors, including James F. Byrnes. Prioleau also served as the personal attorney to Gov. Byrnes and his wife, Maude, and handled their estates. Known in his later years as "Mr. Citadel," Buddy Prioleau was a longtime member and chairman of The Citadel Board of Visitors. Materials relating to him include papers concerning the estates of James F. and Maude B. Byrnes, The Citadel Board of Visitors, and his involvement in political activities. Four albums of photographs document the 1973-1975 National Governors Conferences; other items in the collection include pens used by Strom Thurmond during his term as governor to sign legislation, and a 1958 newsreel of the late Burnet R. Maybank produced by Hearst Metrotone News, Inc.

Letters and grade reports documenting the studies of Claudius Fike as a cadet at Columbia's Arsenal Academy and Charleston's Citadel Academy. Includes letters from Fike at Arsenal Academy, written to his parents, George Adam and Didamie Emaline Hicks Fike, in the Spartanburg vicinity, describing daily regimen, studies, and the strict military discipline facing cadets preparing to enter The Citadel; letter, 20 Apr. 1862, describing Fike's dress uniform made of cloth produced at the nearby Saluda Factory, but which sported U.S. eagle buttons; and letter, 1 May 1862, re good diet provided by the Academy. Contains letters written from The Citadel relating impressions of the impact of the war on civilians, including letter, 20 Dec. 1863, in which Fike enclosed fragments of a fatal shell from the bombardment of Charleston; letter, 5 Aug. 1864, reporting that large numbers of citizens attended the dress parades at The Citadel every Friday; and items from Fike's later life documenting his career as an educator and including a photocopy of his obituary.

Vanderhorst family. Papers, 1787-1838.

Title: Papers, 1787-1838.

The papers consist of one manuscript volume and three miscellaneous manuscripts. The manuscript volume is approximately 200 handwritten pages. It is headed "Kiawah Island, S.C./March 14, 1827," but there are diary entries only for September 18-27, 1838 (at the end of the volume). Nearly all of the volume was written as two works of fiction. The first approximately one hundred pages describes how a Philadelphia woman referred to as the wife of "Mr. Lovely" tried to reorganize a plantation and later made an extended trip to Charleston. The next fifty or so pages is a short story entitled "The Debtor." The diary entries at the end of the volume mention parting "with my boys," the author breaking her arm, a yellow fever outbreak (including the death of a "citadel soldier"), and mention of a possible hurricane. The front of the volume has a sketch of a one-horse, two-wheel cart with several women in it. The miscellaneous documents all relate to the Vanderhorst family, and each consists of one page: a record that the will of John Vanderhorst was proved on 27 Feb. 1787 with Arnoldus Vanderhorst II (1748-1815) and Thomas Waring, Sr. his executors; a letter by Charles Cotesworth Pinckney to Gov. Vanderhorst dated 21 Aug. 1795 and referring to Fort Johnson; and a newspaper clipping of the obituary of "Lewis Vander Horst" (Lewis Morris Vanderhorst), who was killed in battle on May 28, 1864 in Virginia.

Includes correspondence with former Citadel roommate and noted malariologist Theodore Brevard Hayne (1898-1930), of Congaree, S.C.; Hasell and Hayne collaborated on a malaria survey in Lake City, Fla., as employees of the Public Health Service in 1922. In Feb. 1939 Hasell was appointed Sanitary Engineer with the South Carolina Public Service Authority and was assigned to the Santee-Cooper power and navigation project. Among the records documenting his work on this project are three journals: 3 Jan. 1938-31 Aug. 1939; 1 Sept. 1939-29 Mar. 1940; and 1 Apr.-5 Dec. 1940, 24-26 Feb. 1941. Contains 463 manuscripts, 1930-1943, 1945; 226 photographs, ca. 1938-1942; 7 manuscript volumes, 1930, 1932, 1937-1941; 156 technical leaflets and other publications, 1914-1958, chiefly issued by the U.S. Public Health Service; while employed by the Public Service Authority, Hasell filed bi-monthly reports of activities; there are also progress reports of Dr. E.M. Rice, Director of the Health and Sanitation Division, and of E.T. Heyward who served as acting director after Rice left for military duty. Correspondence and reports reveal the complexity of Hasell's job as he was responsible for a number of different programs, even overseeing the division's fleet of cars and trucks; Hasell worked primarily in the areas around Pinopolis, Moncks Corner, and St. Stephen, S.C.; he spent the majority of his time collecting larvae, inspecting WPA camps, setting out mosquito traps, and working with local health departments and townspeople. Correspondence and reports cease at the end of 1943, shortly before Hasell left the project to begin training for malaria control work in the U.S. Army.

Chess Association and state champion in 1928; includes letters documenting this aspect of Bond's life, as well as photographs of a visit to the home of chess legend Paul Morphy in New Orleans. Bond was a distant cousin of the Revolutionary War officer, General "Mad" Anthony Wayne, and much of this collection is related to the Wayne family, including the 1818 obituary of Bond's great-grandfather William Wayne that was published in the Georgetown Gazette, along with a remembrance of the same individual (dated 18 Feb. 1864) recorded by another family member, Catherine Wayne Chrietzberg; also includes letter, 21 Sept. 1837, written by Francis Asbury Wayne (son of William Wayne). Includes genealogical information on the following related families: Ballentine, Fishburne, Fullarton, Simons, Sinkler, and Snipes. A detailed family history, prepared and illustrated by Bond for his granddaughter Mary Ellen in 1923, shows the relationships between all these lines. Other items include genealogical correspondence, six annotated photographs by Bond of his boyhood home in Marion, S.C., and a 13 Feb. 1912 letter from Bonds' son Oliver to his mother, on active duty at the Panama Canal.

Lt. Munnerlyn was stationed at various places stateside during World War II including Fort Moultrie (Charleston, S.C.); Camp Tyson (Tennessee); Fort Douglas (Utah); and the Portland Port of Embarkation. Military correspondence contains special orders, secret, restricted, and general, memos, and reports. One report, dated 26 Aug 1942, gives the findings of a Disposition Board after a review of the medical condition of Munnerlyn. Due to metatarsalgia in his right foot, he was restricted to duties that did not require prolonged walking or standing. Personal correspondence includes notes of condolence, thank-you notes and letters from friends re deployments and locations of Citadel graduates, activities at the Yacht Club and the threat of its takeover by the Army-Navy Club.

While her early writings focused on French history and translations, Fox-Genovese later wrote extensively on southern women, slavery, and feminism. Fox-Genovese taught at University of Rochester (N.Y.), the State University of New York at Binghamton, and Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., where she founded the Institute for Women's Studies. She was married to Eugene D. Genovese, southern historian and author. The collection contains correspondence, writings, legal papers and other items documenting the professional and private life of Elizabeth Fox-Genovese. Correspondence is chiefly personal. Writings include drafts of articles, books, and translations. Professional activities reflected in the collection include involvement with professional associations and societies, talks and lectures, conference attendance, participation in conservative causes, and editorship of professional journals. Legal materials document the discrimination and sexual harassment lawsuit filed by Virginia Gould against Emory University and Fox-Genovese, as well as Fox-Genovese's testimony for the defense in the court battles to integrate the Citadel and Virginia Military Institute (VMI). Photographs, early diaries, medical records, and financial papers are largely personal. Also included are early writings, correspondence, and other materials related to her husband, Eugene D. Genovese.
