Charles, a cadet at the Citadel Academy, Charleston, S.C., and a member of 1st South Carolina Regiment of Rifles (Orr's Regiment), Company G. Includes letters, 1858-1859, relating to buying and selling slaves in Louisiana and Mississippi by members of the Charles family; letter, 16 Nov. 1860, G.W. Caldwell, Fulton, Ark., to sister-in-law, Ellen P. (Charles Woodside), describing farm life, cotton and corn crops in Arkansas; letter, 24 Apr. 1861, Jesse S. McGee, Camp Bacon, Charleston, to Mollie Charles, re the possibility of South Carolina volunteers having to defend Virginia and his certainty that the volunteers would refuse such service if it came to a vote; and genealogical information on the Charles and McGee families.
