Consisting of correspondence, drafts of published work, and other papers re Leland's career in education, including photocopy of statement, 1860, signed by trustees of Davidson College, commending Leland's competency as an instructor, and accepting his resignation over policy differences with other faculty; muster roll and pay roll, 30 Apr. - 31 May 1862, Co. C, Maj. Edward Manigault's battalion, under J.A. Leland's command; photocopy of letter, 20 Aug. [18]69, from J.K. Riley, Laurens, S.C., offering Leland presidency of Laurensville Female College; and photocopies of statements, 14 Feb. 1873, Spartanburg, S.C., signed by president and faculty of Wofford College, commending Leland for service at various colleges, and 15 Feb. 1873, Columbia Theological Seminary, written on occassion of Leland's departure for a new "educational enterprise" in Meridian, Miss. Also includes newspaper clippings, 1872, "Journal of a Reputed Ku Klux Prisoner," account of Leland's imprisonment serialized in The Southern Presbyterian; draft copies, [ca. 1874-1876], of Leland's book, A Voice From South Carolina, describing politics, government, and Ku Klux Klan activities, particularly in Laurens County, S.C.; letter, 31 Jan. [18]87, from W[illia]m H. Robert, Cincinnati, Ohio, thanking Leland for a copy of his book for the library, and expressing sympathy toward the people of South Carolina; photocopy of letter, 13 June 1878, Meridian, Miss., from Jos[eph] Bardwell, re Leland's defeat in election for State Superintendent of Education; photocopy of letter, 27 Mar. [18]82, Columbia, from Geo[rge] Howe, requesting information re dates of the Rev. Aaron W. Leland's tenure at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, Charleston, and James Island Presbyterian Church; and photocopy of Leland's statement, 23 Sept. 1889, Mount Pleasant, S.C., re his election and two terms, 1843- 1845, as Superintendent of Public Works, including copy of printed report presented to the legislature, Nov. 1844, re income from toll gates on roads and canals, and payments for salaries and maintainence.

Manigault, Edward, 1817-1874

Son of Joseph Manigault (1763-1843) of Charleston, S.C. He served in the Mexican War, and afterwards as a South Carolina state ordnance officer, and a railroad engineer. In 1863 he was appointed a major in the Confederate Army and given command of an artillery unit called the Siege Train. In Feb. 1865, Manigualt was in command of a small infantry force of 161 men who defended Grimball's Causeway (at or near James Island, S.C.) against a much larger Federal force.
