In a letter, 1819 June 3, to Nicholas H. Lewis, secretary of the Rivanna Company, Jefferson notifies Lewis that depositions will be taken in Jefferson's suit against the company.

The collection consists chiefly of correspondence of Minor while an assistant to Dr. James Carmichael of Fredericksburg, 1803-1805, and a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania. Topics include the study of anatomy, the lectures of Benjamin Rush, professors William Shippen and Caspar Wistar, and studies at the University of Edinburgh by Minor's friends, George Watson and James Alexander, who found their medical studies there disappointing. Of interest are a description of surgery performed by Dr. Carmichael and two other Fredericksburg physicians in 1805; a discussion of Dr. Rush's "unity of disease" vs. Dr. William Cullen's "nosology"; manuscript notes on Rush's theory of the functions of the liver, spleen and pancreas; and an 1810 description of trans-Allegheny lands. Additional correspondents include Robert Briggs, John Lewis, Robert Miller, Peter Minor, Garret Minor, John Quarles, and J. Shelton Watson.

The volume contains accounts of the balances of about 100 persons who had subscribed to an unknown fund for the University of Virginia some years previously. The debit for each was dated April 30 or 31. By June 30th, the latest date of entry only a handful of payments had been credited to these accounts. Subscribers included William Cabell, Jr., John W. Eppes, Charles Everett, Jesse W. Garth, Henry Lee, James Leitch, Nicholas H. Lewis, John Marks whose subscription was paid by Reuben Lewis, Armistead T. Mason, Peter Minor, James Monroe, Wilson Cary Nicholas, Bernard Peyton, Thomas M. Randolph and David Watson Of interest is a note that William Watson, an Albemarle County saddler, paid his subscription by the hire of [his slave?] "Matt." The second half of the book contains signed receipts for payments made by Brockenbrough to various purveyors of merchandise and laborers working on the building of the University of Virginia as well as faculty salaries. Recipients included George Blaettermann, Charles Bonnycastle, James Dinsmore, Dinsmore & Neilson, Robley Dunglison, John P. Emmet, Alexander Garrett, Thomas H. Key, George Long, Reuben Maury, Giacomo Raggi, Thomas E. Randolph, George Tucker, William Wertenbaker. A loose alphabetical index in the volume does not match either half of the volume,

The collection also contains some scattered family correspondence including typed transcripts of letters from Francis W. Topics include personal financial and legal matters, family news, the study of botany, the War of 1812, selling of slaves and prices, a duel, Central College, the Panic of 1819, People mentioned include the Abbe Correa, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, John Randolph of Roanoke, Thomas Mann Randolph and Wilson Cary Nicholas, and rumors of his slave "James" forging passes. The collection also contans an early daguerreotype [1855?] of Niagara Falls from Prospect Point (by Platt D. Babbitt?); a photograph of Thomas Alexander Cunningham in his Army Surgeon uniform; a photographof a portrait of Maria Walker Gilmer Cunningham; and a photograph of Alma H. Crown grant makes river Jefferson's land, and inquests agreed that Jefferson's dam does not interfere with rights of others. Rappahannock River and Appomattox Mills disputes. Mentions Henry Williams, Milton, and Secretary's Ford. The brief, 1818 April 7, states that previous inquests established that Jefferson's dam above Shadwell mill not harmful, or an infringement of public rights. An aid to navigation, already did most of Rivanna Company's work by getting through South West mountains. Company built locks above mill, interfering with its water supply, and placed toll house near mill. Directors profiting at Jefferson's expense. Mentions Albemarle Co., Milton, Moore's ford, Secretary's ford, Sandy Falls, Potomac River, James River, Rappahannock River, Peter Jefferson, Thomas Mann Randolph, Peter Minor, John Brown, and directors George Divers, William D.
