Gilmer family papers [manuscript], 1811-1993.

The collection contains a folder of clippings, articles, and printed miscellany pertaining to early Charlottesville, 1903-1993; a memorandum book of George C. Gilmer "Buckeyeland," 1867, that mentions buying a raffle ticket for $10.00 to support Mrs. General Lee; and notes and miscellaney regarding the Ceramic Society of Virginia and the Art Group of the American Association of University Women. The collection also contains some scattered family correspondence including typed transcripts of letters from Francis W. Gilmer to Peter Minor, 1811-1824, together with one letter each to his brother, Harmer Gilmer, Spencer Roane, and Dr. Frank Carr as well as two from Minor to Gilmer. Topics include personal financial and legal matters, family news, the study of botany, the War of 1812, selling of slaves and prices, a duel, Central College, the Panic of 1819, People mentioned include the Abbe Correa, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, John Randolph of Roanoke, Thomas Mann Randolph and Wilson Cary Nicholas, and rumors of his slave "James" forging passes. The collection also contans an early daguerreotype [1855?] of Niagara Falls from Prospect Point (by Platt D. Babbitt?); a photograph of Thomas Alexander Cunningham in his Army Surgeon uniform; a photographof a portrait of Maria Walker Gilmer Cunningham; and a photograph of Alma H. McCauley in her World War I Red Cross volunteer uniform.
