Herald (Ship) logbook, 1803-1804.
The logbook of the ship Herald details a shipping voyage from Salem, Mass., to Jakarta, Aug. 1803-May 1804. The ship's home port was Salem; the owners were Nathaniel Silsbee, Samuel Parkman, and Ebenezer Preble; the master and logbook keeper was Zachariah F. Silsbee. The logbook includes a crew list; accounts of at least one death; the detention of persons; diseases on board, including a dysentery epidemic; wounds and injuries to some of the merchant mariners on board; an episode of disorderly conduct; accounts of an attempted mutiny; and notes on shipboard occupations. The illustrations are profile views. During its voyage, the Herald spoke the brigantine Iris out of Wilmington, N.C., and the ship Severn.
