Herald (Ship) logbook, 1804-1805.

The logbook of the ship Herald details a shipping voyage from Salem, Mass., to Rotterdam, Guangzhou Shi (Canton), India, Bali, and back to Boston, June 1804-Oct. 1805. The ship's home port was Salem; the owners were Nathaniel Silsbee, Samuel Parkman, and Ebenezer Preble; the master and logbook keeper was Zachariah F. Silsbee. The logbook includes observations on animals, birds, and indigenous peoples seen during the voyage; a list of the merchant mariners on board and at least one wound and injury to the crew; notes on shipboard occupations and recreation on board; and equipment and supplies, specifically provisions, on board. The logbook's illustrations consist of profile views. During its voyage, the Herald spoke the ships Alert (out of Boston) and American Packet (out of N.Y.).
