Title:
Bob Bailey Studios photographic archive, 1932-1998.
Comprised of over 500,000 images, the Bob Bailey Studios Photographic Archive provides a rich pictorial history of life in Houston from the 1930s through the 1990s. The Bailey brothers' archive features a remarkable variety of people and events, including visits by touring movie stars and campaigning presidents, aerial views of the burgeoning Houston skyline, byproducts of the petroleum industry such as drilling rigs, oil tankers, and gas stations, large gatherings of crowds for parades on Main Street, and the interiors and exteriors of early movie palaces. Particularly noteworthy portions of the archive include images depicting life in Houston during World War II and coverage of local news events such as the Texas City disaster and Howard Hughes' 1939 visit to Houston. The archive is comprised of a variety of photographic formats, including color and black and white negative film, motion picture film, mounted and unmounted prints, video, and compact discs. The size of materials in the archive also varies; 8 in X 10 in negatives form the bulk of the archive's earliest materials, while later materials consist primarily of 4 in X 5 in, 120 mm, and 35 mm negatives. In addition to photographic material, the archive also includes ledgers listing the contents of the archive and a small amount of printed material.

Hemingway, Ernest, 1899-1961. Ernest Hemingway papers [manuscript], 1925-1966.
Title:
Ernest Hemingway papers [manuscript], 1925-1966.
The collection contains manuscripts of essays, poems, and short stories including "The Dangerous Summer"; a clean carbon of "Green Hills of Africa" typed by Jane Armstrong; and galley proofs of "The old man and the sea," "A Farewell to Arms," and "Death in the Afternoon." The collection also contains the manuscript of a dramatization of "The Snows of Kilimanjaro"; the manuscript of Peter Viertel's screenplay of "The Sun also Rises" with Hemingway's extensive autograph corrections, together with the mimeographed first draft and final script; the transcript of an interview with students in Hailey, Idaho; and page proofs of the original version of "Papa Hemingway." In letters to Ernest Walsh and Ethel Moorhead, Hemingway chiefly discusses publication of "The Undefeated" including printing problems with "This Quarter." He also discusses writing "The Sun also Rises," The Fall of Herriot's Government," a "Tyrolean Walking Tour, and mentions Sylvia Beach, H. L. Mencken, Robert McAlmon, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, and the current French and Italian governments. Correspondence with Horace Liveright discusses the publication of "In our time," including the replacement of a censorable story, sales potential and possibility of favorable reviews. Letters also discuss "The torrents of spring" and its satirization of Sherwood Anderson, and mention James Joyce's "Finnegan's Wake," an appearance in an anthology, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Louis Bromfield, and Ralph Barton. Correspondence between Ralph Ingersoll and Joseph Losey discusses a production of "The fifth column." Letters to A. E. Hotchner discuss work for Cosmopolitan magazine, Italy after World War II, fishing, hunting, bull-fighting and travels in Spain, "Across the River and into the Trees," "Old Man and the Sea," Hotchner's adaptations of Hemingway's work for the theater, and the writing of and events and people in "The dangerous summer" including matadors Antonio Ordóñez and Luis Miguel Dominguín. There are comments on Ingrid Bergman, Malcolm Cowley, Robert Flaherty, Joe Di Maggio and baseball, Ava Gardner, John O'Hara, Ted Patrick, Eric Sevareid, Gary Cooper, Valerie Danby-Smith, Alfred Rice, cock-fighting, sailing, the 1948 election, Korean War, Cuban revolution, Peter Buckley's "Bullfight," business arrangements, health and sobriety, and family. Several letters from Mary Hemingway to Hotchner discuss Hemingway's health and writing as well as her own writing. Individual letters mention hunting in Idaho, Leonard Bernstein, the Cuban revolution, bull fighting and "Death in the Afternoon." Letters to Bronisław Zieli*nski discuss shooting in Idaho, royalties to establish a prize in Poland, health, the Cuban Revolution, short story "Cross Roads," love of Spain, translations and Zieli*nski's PEN prize. Correspondence with Jane and Richard Armstrong concerns the typing of "Green Hills of Africa." The letters also mention John and Katy Dos Passos, Max Perkins, requested photographs of Carlos Gutiérrez rigging baits, work on Cuba, H. L. Woodward, and response of old timers in Kenya to "Green Hills." A letter to Peter Viertel, written on safari in Africa with his wife Mary, mentions a hitch as temporary game ranger, surveying elephants and fish, and flying with Roy Marsch. He writes in more detail about looking "after a leopard who killed 10 goats in one night...."; boxing with native "boys"; and learning to hunt with a spear, giving a list of animals killed to date. He also refers to [movie collaboration?] between Faulkner and Hughes, noting "all the stories I know now are barred farom the screen on acct of miscegenation...." Another letter of interest to Philip La Follette describes the development of characters and incidents in "Across the river and into the trees" and relates an incident from the Battle of the Bulge involving Col. Jim Luckett of the 12th Infantry. Correspondence with Barbara A. Cohen discusses the Caedmon Publishers proposal to do a Hemingway recording. Two letters to bookseller Paul Romaine give permission to reprint a poem in "Salmagundi," respond angrily to Romaine's suggestion that he stop writing about the lost generation and bulls and comment on Thornton Wilder, John Dos Passos, Victor Hugo, Emile Zola, Gustave Flaubert and Stendhal. Additional letters discuss James Joyce, life in Paris, discrepancies between views of critics and readers, criticism by Max Eastman, the long time necesary to learn the writer's trade, bullfighters, being struck by lightning, John Hemingway's World War II service, a postcard of his Key West house, and editorial decisions about "Farewell to Arms." He also responds to collectors, and lists the best three books of 1932. People mentioned include Sidney Franklin, Samuel Goldwyn, and Archibald MacLeish. Additional correspondents include Merle Armitage, Campbell Becket, Robert Bridges, Marlene Dietrich, M. E. Gilfond, Herbert Gorman, Gregory H. Hemingway, Patrick Hemingway, Valerie Danby-Smith Hemingway, R. W. Stallman, Frank Stanton, Charles B. Strauss, and Ernest Walsh. The collection contains photographs of Hemingway, Mary Hemingway and bullfights, including nine by by Robert Capa; a photograph with Myrna Loy, William Powell and Luise Ranier taken on a visit to Paramount Pictures; and miscellaneous photographs from magazines. Many of the photographs were taken with Ava Gardner in Spain during the filming of "For whom the bell tolls." The collection also contains contracts; recordings of readings by Hemingway, including interviews by Patrick Hunan; a water-color portrait of Hemingway; and a record album "A portrait in sound of Ernest Hemingway". The collection also contains circa 100 newsclippings about Hemingway and his work collected by Clifton Waller Barrett. The collection also contains an untitled 16 mm motion picture film (silent, in color) of Hemingway in Cuba.

Minneapolis-Saint Paul Metropolitan Airports Commission. Audio-visual materials, 1915-1990s.
Title:
Audio-visual materials, 1915-1990s.
Mainly copies of photographs collected by the Metropolitan Airports Commission [MAC] from the private collections of Vince Doyle, Bill Ellis, and Noel Allard, and from the Minnesota Historical Society. Some but not all are identified with their original ownership. They are divided into four series: individuals, which are mainly MAC, Wold-Chamberlain Field, or Northwest Airlines employees and directors, including Charles Holman, or well-known visitors, including Amelia Earhart, Charles Lindbergh, Will Rogers, and Dean Martin; events and airport scenes; aircraft; and aerial views. The latter three are all arranged chronologically and are largely centered around Wold-Chamberlain Field. Included are views of the 1923 Wold-Chamberlain Field dedication; Howard Hughes' round the world flight refueling (1938); World War II military troops and aircraft; building construction, particularly the West Side and Lindbergh terminals; various airlines' terminal counters, hangars, and aircraft, particularly Northwest; airmail service; air crashes; DePonti Aviation Company, inc.; expansion, especially additional runways; the Navy Base; the 1930 visit of the Question Mark, the first plane flown non-stop from France to America; and refitting of Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle's B-25s prior to the raid on Tokyo (1942). Other sites documented include Holman Field, the city of Minneapolis, Mississippi River flooding in St. Paul, and Lake Elmo, Duluth, Flying Cloud, and Crystal airports. The videocassettes, collected or developed by MAC, document local television coverage of emergency preparedness at Wold-Chamberlain Field (1987), the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport's sixtieth anniversary (ca. 1990), Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame induction ceremonies (1992, 1997), and MAC's noise monitoring and sound proofing programs and dual track planning process (1994-1995) and snowplowing procedures (1997). The sound cassette contains MAC's fiftieth anniversary presentation, narrated by Dave Moore and containing Governor Harold Stassen's comments establishing the Commission in 1943 (1993). The related visual materials include postal first day covers, with cachets, that document the first general airmail (1930), international airmail (1931), and airmail to North Dakota (1931) flights from Wold-Chamberlain Field and the first DC-10 flight (1970); blueprints of Civil Aeronautics Administration and General Mills hangars (1939, 1951); a Minneapolis Park Board sign concerning airplane noise over the Veteran's Hospital (ca. 1940s); Minneapolis Park Board chair Theodore Wirth's preliminary surveys and plans to acquire and improve Wold-Chamberlain Field (1927); and maps of Wold-Chamberlain Field (1945-1970).

Included are photos of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, Winston Churchill, King George and Queen Mary of England, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Will Rogers, Rudy Vallee, and Howard Hughes. In the taped interview Mr. Adams gives some insights into the Roosevelt administration. In addition, there are photos of Adams, some biographical material, and film negatives with explanatory notes. Title:
[Hughes Electronics Collection]. 1940-2003.
The Archives of Hughes Electronics Corporation contain the files and publications of the corporate communications department and include complete files of its corporate newsletters Hughes News, 1948-95, and Hughes Herald, 1996-7; press releases, 1956-96; Annual Reports; technical, informational and marketing publications; videos; corporate speeches; biographical files of executives; historical bio files; and photographs of Howard Hughes and aircraft (particularly the 'Spruce Goose'), developed by Hughes Aircraft and test flown by Howard Hughes. The collection comprises approximately 125 cubic feet of material including large framed portraits of Hughes and corporate presidents. This collection provides unique and comprehensive internal documentation of one of the United States' most influential engineering firms for almost a half-century and for the whole period of its independent existence. As such it was the center of Hughes's corporate empire, and the company with the greatest and most long term impact in engineering, where Hughes's genius in fact lay. It also forms a significant historical record of the legacy of American icon, Howard Hughes.

Mainly copies of photographs collected by the Metropolitan Airports Commission [MAC] from the private collections of Vince Doyle, Bill Ellis, and Noel Allard, and from the Minnesota Historical Society. Some but not all are identified with their original ownership. They are divided into four series: individuals, which are mainly MAC, Wold-Chamberlain Field, or Northwest Airlines employees and directors, including Charles Holman, or well-known visitors, including Amelia Earhart, Charles Lindbergh, Bob Hope, Will Rogers, and Dean Martin; events and airport scenes; aircraft; and aerial views.
