On March 28, 1967, when the Nevada legislature was debating authorizing a study on the feasibility of starting a medical school, industrialist Howard Hughes announced a pledge of support for a medical school for the next 20 years. This offered support led to a resolution of legislative backing needed to qualify for federal and private foundation funds. A two-year medical school was established and instruction began in 1971.
