Nicholas deBelleville "Nick" Katzenbach (January 17, 1922 – May 8, 2012) was an American lawyer who served as United States Attorney General during the Lyndon B. Johnson administration. Katzenbach was born in Philadelphia and raised in Trenton. His parents were Edward L. Katzenbach, who served as Attorney General of New Jersey, and Marie Hilson Katzenbach, who was the first female president of the New Jersey State Board of Education. His uncle, Frank S. Katzenbach, served as Mayor of Trenton, New Jersey and as a Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. He was named after his mother's great-great-grandfather, Nicolas de Belleville (1753–1831), a French medical doctor who accompanied Kazimierz Pułaski to America and settled in Trenton in 1778. Katzenbach was raised an Episcopalian, and was partly of German descent. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy and was accepted into Princeton University. Katzenbach was a junior at Princeton in 1941, enlisting right after Pearl Harbor, and served in the United States Army Air Corps in World War II. Assigned as a navigator in the 381st Bomb Squadron, 310th Bomb Group in North Africa. His B-25 Mitchell Bomber was shot down February 23, 1943, over the Mediterranean Sea off North Africa. He spent over two years as a prisoner of war in Italian and German POW camps, including Stalag Luft III, the site of the "Great Escape", which Katzenbach assisted in. He read extensively as a prisoner, and ran an informal class based on Principles of Common Law. He received his B.A. cum laude from Princeton University in 1945 (partly based on Princeton giving him credit for the 500-odd books he had read in captivity). As part of his degree, Katzenbach completed a senior thesis titled "The Little Steel Formula - An Historical Appraisal." He received an LL.B. cum laude from Yale Law School in 1947, where he served as Articles Editor of the Yale Law Journal. From 1947 to 1949, he was a Rhodes Scholar at Balliol College, Oxford. On June 8, 1946, Katzenbach married Lydia King Phelps Stokes, in a ceremony officiated by her uncle, Anson Phelps Stokes, former canon of the Washington National Cathedral. Her father was Harold Phelps Stokes, a newspaper correspondent and secretary to Herbert Hoover. Katzenbach was admitted to the New Jersey bar in 1950 and the Connecticut bar in 1955. He was an associate in the law firm of Katzenbach, Gildea and Rudner in 1950. From 1950 to 1952, he was attorney-advisor in the Office of General Counsel to the Secretary of the Air Force. Katzenbach was on the faculty of Rutgers Law School from 1950 to 1951; was an associate professor of law at Yale from 1952 to 1956; and was a professor of law at the University of Chicago from 1956 to 1960. He served in the U.S. Department of Justice as Assistant Attorney General of the Office of Legal Counsel in 1961–1962 and as Deputy Attorney General appointed by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. After the assassination of President Kennedy Katzenbach continued to serve with the Johnson administration On February 11th, 1965 President Johnson appointed Katzenbach the 65th Attorney General of the United States, and he held the office until October 2, 1966. He then served as Under Secretary of State from 1966 to 1969. In September 2008, Katzenbach published Some of It Was Fun: Working with RFK and LBJ (W. W. Norton), a memoir of his years in Government service. On June 11, 1963, Katzenbach was a primary participant in one of the most famous incidents of the Civil Rights struggle. Alabama Governor George Wallace stood in front of Foster Auditorium at the University of Alabama in an attempt to stop desegregation of that institution by the enrollment of two black students, Vivian Malone and James Hood. This became known as the "Stand in the Schoolhouse Door". Wallace stood aside only after being confronted by Katzenbach, accompanied by federal marshals and the Alabama National Guard. Katzenbach has been credited with providing advice after the assassination of John F. Kennedy that led to the creation of the Warren Commission. On November 25, 1963, he sent a memo to Johnson's White House aide Bill Moyers recommending the creation of a Presidential Commission to investigate the assassination. To combat speculation of a conspiracy, Katzenbach said the results of the FBI's investigation should be made public. He wrote, in part: "The public must be satisfied that Oswald was the assassin; that he did not have confederates who are still at large". Four days after Katzenbach's memo, Johnson appointed some of the nation's most prominent figures, including the Chief Justice of the United States, to the Commission. Conspiracy theorists later called the memo, one of thousands of files released by the National Archives in 1994, the first sign of a cover-up by the government. Katzenbach left government service to work for IBM in 1969, where he served as general counsel during the lengthy antitrust case filed by the Department of Justice seeking the break-up of IBM. He and Cravath, Swaine & Moore attorney Thomas Barr led the case for the computer giant for 13 years until the government finally decided to drop it in 1982. Later Katzenbach led the opposition against the case filed by the European Economic Community. He retired from IBM in 1986 and became a partner at the firm of Riker, Danzig, Scherer, Hyland & Perretti in New Jersey. He was named chairman of the failing Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) in 1991. In 1980, Katzenbach testified in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia for the defense of W. Mark Felt, later revealed to be the "Deep Throat" of the Watergate scandal and later Deputy Director of the FBI; accused and later found guilty of ordering illegal wiretaps on American citizens. In December 1996, Katzenbach was one of New Jersey's fifteen members of the Electoral College, who cast their votes for the Clinton/Gore ticket. Katzenbach also testified on behalf of President Clinton on December 8, 1998, before the House Judiciary Committee hearing, considering whether to impeach President Clinton. On March 16, 2004, MCI Communications in a press release announced "its Board of Directors has elected former U.S. Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach as non-executive Chairman of the Board, effective upon MCI's emergence from Chapter 11 protection. Katzenbach has been an MCI Board member since July 2002." MCI later merged with Verizon. Katzenbach and his wife Lydia retired to Princeton, New Jersey, with a summer home on Martha's Vineyard in West Tisbury, Massachusetts. His son is writer John Katzenbach. His daughter, Maria, is also a published novelist. After the death of W. Willard Wirtz in April 2010, Katzenbach became the longest surviving former U.S. Cabinet member. Katzenbach died on May 8, 2012, at the age of 90.

General Records of the Department of Justice. 1790 - 2002. Photographs of Attorneys General
This series consists of photographs that document the Attorneys General of the United States. Attorneys General are documented through photographic copies of paintings and photographic portraits. In addition, some of the images show various activities of the Attorneys General, including press conferences, meetings, oaths of office, and banquets. Many of the photographs were used as part of a commemorative book, "200th Anniversary of the Office of the Attorney General", which highlights the history of the Office of Attorney General and the celebration of the anniversary on September 22, 1989. A copy of this book is included in this series in addition to another Department of Justice book,"Attorneys General of the United States, 1798-1985", which used many of the photographs. Not every Attorney General from the time period of the series is represented. A few images contain multiple Attorney Generals.

Title:
David L. Bazelon papers.
The David L. Bazelon papers include his case files (c. 57 linear feet), filed chronoligically and alphabetically by appellant within each year except when the United States acted as appellant. These cases are interfiled alphabetically by apellee. The materials remain as Judge Bazelon kept them. The Judge's speeches, lectures, and writings (c. 36 linear feet) are filed chronolgically. Drafts, memoranda and correspondence are included in these folders. Also of interest are the lists of friends, former clerks, and colleagues to whom he sent copies of drafts. These lists give a good picture of the liberal circles in which the Judge traveled. His court administration papers (c. 6.5 linear feet) show the bureaucratic side of the Chief Judge's position, including supervising defendants sent to St. Elizabeth's Hospital and coping with problems involving the court's switchboard. The organizational papers (c. 34 linear feet) contain meeting minutes, memoranda and correspondence from the organizations and committees on which the Judge served. The meeting papers (c. 5 linear feet) document meetings or panels to which the Judge was invited to speak or participate on a one-time basis. The subject files (c. 67.5 linear feet) are filed alphabetically by subject. They contain correspondence with colleagues and experts, including a dialogue with then Attorney General Nicolas Katzenbach on criminal interrogations, much of which became public just before the Supreme Court decided the Miranda case. Also prominent in the subject file is a collection of insanity briefs. They reflect Bazelon's interest in the concept of insanity. The biographical and career papers (c. 1.5 linear feet) consist of clippings about him, including letters of congradulations. There are also a number of photographs of the judge, as well as 3 audio cassette tapes of his speeches. Books from his office library and his set of the Federal Reporter Second have been integrated into the library's collection.

Records of the Office of the Secretary of Defense. 1921 - 2008. Policy Files
This series consists of correspondence, memorandums, and reports relating to the various efforts by the Director of Defense Research and Engineering (DDR&E) to develop the U.S. military's technical capabilities from 1964 to 1968. New technology and new applications for old technology are analyzed; command and control systems are assessed; and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) weapons policies and force guidance are researched. The Vietnam War features prominently in the series, including discussion of the countermeasures against the air-defense systems of North Vietnam, particularly Operations Night Song and Pop Eye; analysis of the attrition rates of the different aircraft operating over Southeast Asia, like the F-105 Thunderchief and A-4 Skyhawk; and assessments of various anti-infiltration operations like the electronic barrier system established along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and Operation Commando Lava, a soil-destabilization project designed to disrupt traffic along the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Title:
Herbert Brownell Jr. Additional Papers. 1897 - 1996. Photographs
This series consists of photographic prints, slides, negatives, transparencies, and postcards accumulated by Herbert Brownell, Jr., throughout his lifetime. Many of the images are of members of Brownell and his family, including studio portraits and informal snapshots. Several cabinet card portraits of Brownell's ancestors were made as long ago as the 1880s or 1890s. Other family photographs date to Brownell's childhood and youth and that of his first wife, Doris McCarter Brownell. There are many photos of the Brownells' children. There are also group portraits of Brownell and his family taken up into the 1980s or early 1990s, as well as some photos featuring artist Marion “Riki” Taylor, to whom Brownell was briefly married. Photographs from Brownell's youth include some from his time at the University of Nebraska, where he was a member of the Society of Innocents and the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Some photographs may be from Brownell's long employment at law firm Lord, Day & Lord, although they are not labeled. Brownell appears at meetings of the American Hotel Association and the Hotel Association of New York City. Several photographs show him with groups at restaurant “21” in New York City. Photos of Brownell's early political activity include a few from his runs for state assemblyman in New York in the 1930s, as well as a number taken while Brownell was campaign manager for Thomas E. Dewey's gubernatorial and presidential campaigns during the 1940s. Photos of the candidates and of examples of political advertising are present in the series. Many photos in this series were taken during or just before Herbert Brownell's term as Attorney General during the administration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. These include a small number of photos taken on Eisenhower's 1952 trip to Korea. A set of black and white snapshots shows the members of Eisenhower's Cabinet riding in the 1953 Inauguration Day Parade. Photos feature Attorney General Brownell with the President's Cabinet, at the Department of Justice, at the FBI National Academy, at the White House, at Camp David, and at meetings of the American Bar Association, Inter-American Bar Association, and National Association of Attorneys General. Brownell instituted the Attorney General's Honors Program at the Department of Justice, the first classes of which appear in group photographs with Brownell. He is shown speaking at meetings with the National Industrial Conference Board and the Zionist Organization of America. He is also shown addressing the press, courts, and committees on such topics as governmental investigations, internal security, communism, and wiretapping. Brownell is pictured receiving several honorary degrees during and after his term as Attorney General, including one from the National University of Ireland. Organizations that Brownell was involved in and are depicted in the series include the Bohemian Club, the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, and the governing council of the White Burkett Miller Center at the University of Virginia. Later involvement of Herbert Brownell with the federal government includes dealing with issues of water rights and water quality management on the lower Colorado River, investigating geothermal resources in California's Imperial Valley, and being vice-chairman of the Commission on the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution. He also is pictured with the Congressional sponsors of the 25th Amendment and the supporting American Bar Association Committee, and, in another photo, with the Coalition for Adequate Judicial Compensation while testifying before the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Courts, Civil Liberties and the Administration of Justice. Some locations where Herbert Brownell appears in photographs in this series include the U.S. Military Academy at West Point; the Executive Mansion in Monrovia, Liberia; Middle Temple Hall in London; Peru State College, Nebraska; the Bohemian Grove in California; and Plymouth, Massachusetts. He also appears at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library at conferences on constitutional issues and civil rights. Additional persons of interest who appear in photographs in this series include Sherman Adams, Hawthorne Arey, William H. Avery, Stanley N. Barnes, Birch Bayh, Griffin B. Bell, James V. Bennett, Ezra Taft Benson, Omar Bradley, John W. Bricker, Baron Nigel Bridge of Harwich, Warren E. Burger, W. Randolph Burgess, George H. W. Bush, Clifford P. Case, Emanuel Celler, Benjamin R. The George W. Ball papers document Ball's career as a lawyer, diplomat, investment banker and author. His involvement in Democratic politics, including his time spent on the presidential campaigns of Adlai Stevenson and his service as undersecretary of state for John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson is well documented, as is his often overlooked role with Jean Monnet in European integration.

On April 6, 1968, President Johnson spent much of the day on the telephone monitoring the riots which had broken out in a number of major cities, including Washington, D. C., in response to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. During the afternoon, the President met with General William Westmoreland and a number of top advisors to discuss the situation in Vietnam. General Westmorland had dinner with the President and his daughter Lynda Johnson Robb on the second floor, and he spent the night as a guest at the White House.

On the evening of July 2, 1964, only hours after passage of the bill, on live television, President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, at the White House. He then met with prominent civil rights leaders who had attended the signing ceremony. The Act was the most far-reaching civil rights legislation since the Reconstruction era. It contained provisions to help guarantee Negroes the right to vote; to outlaw racial segregation in public facilities; to authorize the federal government to sue to desegregate public facilities and schools; to allow federal funds to be cut if programs were administered discriminatorily; to outlaw a number of employment practices based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin; and to establish a Community Relations Service to assist in resolving problems. Earlier in the afternoon, President Johnson had attended the swearing-in ceremony of General Maxwell Taylor as the newly appointed Ambassador to Vietnam and a meeting of his Cabinet in the Cabinet Room. In the evening, following a reception for eighteen Latin American ambassadors, President and Mrs. Johnson departed for the LBJ Ranch.
