British-born painter.
Dorothy Eugenie Brett (1883-1977) studied at the Slade School of Art and University College in London. She became friends with Dora Carrington, Katherine Mansfield, John Middleton Murry, Frieda and D.H. Lawrence and other members of the Bloomsbury circle. She documented her friendship with Lawrence in "Lawrence and Brett: A Friendship." New York, 1933. Brett visited New Mexico with Frieda and D.H. Lawrence in 1924, and moved to Taos permanently by 1926. She changed her artistic focus to the Native American Pueblo culture, painting landscapes and portraits with their cultural themes. Her efforts helped create an artistic community in Taos.
Artist.
British painter.
Dorothy Eugenie Brett, born in 1883, was the eldest daughter of the 2nd Viscount Esher, Reginald Baliol Brett, and his wife Eleanor. Besides Dorothy, called Doll by her family, there were two older brothers, Oliver and Maurice, and a younger sister, Sylvia. The children were raised in a restrictive manner similar to other children of the Victorian era. They saw little of their parents, being largely left in the charge of a nanny and other servants. Once the boys were sent to school, a governess was retained for the girls. However, she was dismissed after a short time and the girls' education was left to their mother.
The girls lived a fairly secluded life into their early twenties. Aside from dancing classes with the royal children at nearby Windsor Castle, under the supervision of no less than Queen Victoria, their contact with young people their own age was practically nonexistent. One friendship that they did make was with Margaret Brook, Ranee of Sarawak, a friendship disapproved of by the Brett parents. Over ten years Dorothy formed an emotional attachment to the Ranee, and Sylvia attracted the attention of the Ranee's son, whom she later married against the wishes of her parents. The parents put an end to Dorothy's visits to the Ranee when she was 23, sending her off to their summer home in Scotland. There, an old friend of the family saw some of Dorothy's drawings and persuaded her parents that she should attend the Slade School of Art.
Dorothy Brett was accepted into the Slade School, on a provisional basis, in the fall of 1910. Fellow students at the time included Dora Carrington, Mark Gertler, and David Bomberg. In the tradition of the school, all students dropped their given names and went by their surnames, and so Dorothy became Brett to everyone but her family and went by that name for the rest of her life. Brett completed the four year program at Slade, winning several prizes and honors in her sojourn there. At the end of her second year, Brett's father set her up in a studio of her own, partly to help her artistically and partly to move her out of the family home in town where the servants had begun to complain about the goings on of Brett's artistic friends.
Several important events took place in Brett's life during her school years. She began to develop the auditory problems that would leave her dependent on hearing aids for the rest of her life. She became friends with Gertler,Carrington and Augustus John and, in 1914, she met Lady Ottoline Morrell. In October of 1915 Brett met D.H. Lawrence and his wife Frieda.
Over the next several years Brett spent a great deal of time at the Morrell's Garsington Manor along with members of the Bloomsbury group. She seems to have developed a crush on Ottoline which led to voluminous correspondence but little else. In 1919 Brett's parents helped set her up in a house in Hampstead, London, arranged for an annual allowance, and made a final effort to push her into independence.
In 1923 D.H. and Frieda Lawrence returned to England from North America, thus setting in motion the second phase of Brett's life. Lawrence had been proposing the creation of a community called Rananim for several years without success. He felt that he had found the perfect location for such a spot in Taos, New Mexico, and was now actively seeking members. Only John Middleton Murry and Brett seriously considered the idea and in the spring of 1924, only Brett joined the Lawrences on the Aquatania bound for New York.
Taos became Brett's home. Though she traveled frequently to Mexico, New York, and even made a few trips back to Europe, her roots were firmly planted in New Mexico. She developed a strong emotional attachment to D.H. Lawrence, and after Lawrence's death continued to live in near Frieda for the remainder of Frieda's life. Mable Dodge Luhan, another prominent figure in Taos, also played an important role in Brett's life, alternating between protector and antagonist. In New Mexico Brett painted Native Americans. She was permitted to visit the Pueblo for important ceremonies and then transferred the images to canvas, creating a series of paintings for which she is perhaps best known, the Ceremonials. Her close relationship to D.H. Lawrence made her popular with the researchers who sought to better understand his life. She lived to within a few months of her 94th birthday, dying on August 24th, 1977.
Painter, born London, 1883, died Taos, New Mexico, 1977.
Attended Slade School of Art; joined D.H. and Frieda Lawrence in Taos, 1923; was acquainted with members of Bloomsbury Group and the Taos Art Colony.
Dorothy Eugenie Brett was born 1883 in London, England to Reginald and Eleanor Brett, Viscount and Viscountess of Esher. Serious studies at the Slade School of Art in London during the first decade of the twentieth century acquainted her with famous members of the Bloomsbury circle such as Dora Carrington, Katherine Mansfield, John Middleton Murry, Aldous Huxley and David Herbert Lawrence.
Despite plans by some members of the Bloomsbury group to settle together in Taos, NM, only Brett eventually joined D. H. and Frieda Lawrence in Taos, New Mexico, and in Oaxaca, Mexico as well. Although well known as a member of the triumvirate (with Frieda and Mabel Dodge Luhan) surrounding D.H. Lawrence and "of late [as] an historical character in the cast of a literary drama assiduously pursued, quoted, misquoted, and paraphrased in a thousand volumes" (Frank Waters, "A Tribute To Brett"), Brett is equally famous as a painter of international reputation. After moving to Taos and being stimulated by its natural beauties and wealth of subjects, she quickly became interested in painting the Taos Indians and their native dances.
Brett's work was influential in the building of Taos as an art colony. In his book Masked Gods, Frank Waters claims that there is something ineffable and compelling about Brett's Indian paintings. She is the only painter I have known who has blindly, intuitively caught the valid mystical component of Pueblo character. She paints their native religious rites, ceremonies, and dances in universal terms that are unmistakable (p. 275).
Together with others interested in the arts, most prominently Mabel Dodge Luhan, she was instrumental in attracting to Taos talented people who gave (and still give) Taos its nationwide reputation as an artists' colony. Dorothy Eugenie Brett died 24 August 1977, almost 94 years of age.

Donaldson family. Letters, 1936-1956.
Title:
Letters, 1936-1956.
This is a collection of letters written to Norman V. Donaldson, his wife Hildegarde, and his daughter Virginia "Midge" Donaldson, by Mabel Dodge Luhan, Dorothy Brett, Robinson Jeffers, and "Eileen Q" (Eileen Quinn, who was sales manager for the University of New Mexico Press). The letters suggest that the Donaldsons were well acquainted with the intellectual and artist scene in Taos, New Mexico, and were kept updated through correspondence with Mabel Dodge Luhan and Dorothy Brett. Luhan's letters to Hildegarde and Norman Donaldson are informal and gossipy, and among other things, chronicle an incident in 1938 in which Robinson Jeffers' wife Una shot herself. Jeffers' letters to Hildegarde Donaldson are in response to the same incident. Letters from Brett to Midge and Norman Donaldson are chatty about the various characters vistiing and residing in Taos. Eileen Quinn's cards to Norman Donaldson are light-hearted and congratulatory about Yale Press publications and publicity.

Johnson, Walter Willard, 1897-1968. Spud Johnson Papers, 1896-1973 (bulk 1920-1968).
Title:
Spud Johnson Papers, 1896-1973 (bulk 1920-1968).
Holograph and typescript works and correspondence from friends and associates make up the majority of the Spud Johnson Papers, 1896-1973 (bulk 1920-1968), supplemented by letters and diaries by Johnson and works and correspondence by other authors. The Works Series contains poems, short stories, biographical sketches, essays, reviews, and other literary output by Spud Johnson. Of particular note are various drafts of an untitled novel about Don Grant, holograph and typescript versions of Horizontal Yellow (1935), and groups of essays published for "The Gad Fly" and "The Horsefly" columns. The Correspondence Series is divided into two subseries: Outgoing and Incoming. While there are not a great number of letters from Johnson, his correspondence with William Goyen, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Lynn Riggs is moderately well represented. Better represented are friends, acquaintances, and business associates who wrote to Johnson, including Mary Austin, Dorothy Brett, Witter Bynner, Gladys Cannon, Alexander Fechin, Haniel Long, Daniel McCarthy, the New Yorker, Ruth Swaine, and others. There are also a large number of letters from unidentified writers. The Personal Papers Series is composed of Johnson's diaries, many of which are sequentially numbered and contain observations, notes, some day-to-day activities, and some creative work. Also present are a commonplace book, records dealing with the publication of Horse Fly, Horizontal Yellow, and Laughing Horse, and various notes and receipts. Of particular interest are nine etched plastic printing plates used for Laughing Horse. The Third-Party Works and Correspondence Series includes materials by Witter Bynner, Arthur Ficke, Robert Frost, Mabel Luhan, Lynn Riggs, and others. Many of the third-party works were sent to Johnson for inclusion in Laughing Horse and include notes and letters to Johnson from the authors. There are also a number of cover letters to Norman MacLeod, fellow poet and editor. Included in this section are a number of limericks written by friends for Johnson. Third-party correspondents are generally friends and acquaintances writing to each other, often about Johnson or his affairs, and include Dorothy Brett, Arthur Ficke, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Carl Van Vechten, and others.

Morrell, Ottoline Violet Anne Cavendish-Bentinck, Lady, 1873-1938. Ottoline Morrell Collection, 1882-1946 (bulk 1882-1938).
Title:
Ottoline Morrell Collection, 1882-1946 (bulk 1882-1938).
Correspondence makes up the bulk of the Ottoline Morrell Collection, supplemented by a few holograph and typescript manuscripts by Morrell and other authors. Among the letters in this collection are many photographs and sketches provided by the authors to Morrell. The small Works Series contains holograph drafts of two articles by Morrell, the first a description of some of her memories of D. H. Lawrence and the other a review of an early critical work on Lawrence's writing. Also included are notes she took on a trip to Ireland in 1919. The Correspondence Series contains outgoing (1911-1938) and incoming correspondence (1894-1938). Outgoing correspondence is made up of holograph letters which Morrell wrote to her friends and acquaintances. There are a few letters written for fund-raising and other business purposes, but the majority are personal letters. Incoming correspondence forms the bulk of this collection with well over 2,500 letters, mostly personal, written to Morrell on various topics of art, politics, World War I, literature, and the gossip for which Bloomsbury was famous. Within this series 1,782 letters from Bertrand Russell thoroughly cover their lengthy relationship. Other accumulations of letters are present from Clive and Vanessa Bell, Augustine Birrell, Elizabeth Bowen, Dorothy Brett, Dora Carrington, John Cramb, T. S. Eliot, Mark Gertler, Frances Hackett, Augustus John, Henry Lamb, Frank Prewett, Siegfried Sassoon, Lytton Strachey, and many others. The Miscellaneous Series is divided between works, correspondence, and materials by Bertrand Russell. The works include poems and short essays by other authors, including a collection of poems by Frank Prewett. The correspondence portion contains letters between Morrell's friends and quite a few letters to Philip Morrell. Of particular note is the correspondence between Philip Morrell and Frieda Lawrence regarding the legal issues of D. H. Lawrence's estate. The final section contains works by Bertrand Russell and a number of letters from him to other people, including a group of letters to his brother written from prison.

Lawrence, D. H. (David Herbert), 1885-1930. D.H. Lawrence Collection, 1904-1981 (bulk 1904-1935).
Title:
D.H. Lawrence Collection, 1904-1981 (bulk 1904-1935).
Manuscripts of novels, poems, short stories, plays, and other writings, correspondence, transcripts of court hearings, and miscellany trace the writing career and personal life of D.H. Lawrence, 1904-1981 (bulk 1904-1935), as well as popular reaction to his work. The Works series contains drafts of many of Lawrence's major works, including Sons and Lovers, Aaron's Rod, Women in Love, and four versions of Lady Chatterley's Lover. Also included is a holograph of "Odour of Chrysanthemums" transcribed by Louise Burrows, as well as numerous versions of The Plumed Serpent: Quetzalcoatl and Mr. Noon. Page proofs and paste-ups from the publication of The Body of God, a series of poems by Lawrence produced posthumously, are included. The materials in this series are in a variety of formats including notes and fragments, notebooks, typescripts, galley proofs, paste-ups, and page proofs. The Letters series is extensive and made up largely of holograph letters and notes from Lawrence. The series is fairly evenly split between business and personal matters and several recipients of these letters are particularly well represented, including Lady Cynthia Asquith, Achsah and Earl Brewster, Curtis Brown Ltd., A.W. MacLeod, Knud Merrild, Nancy Pearn, Laurence Pollinger, and Thomas Seltzer. The Recipient series is made conspicuous by its small size. Very few letters to Lawrence are included and most of those that are present deal with business. The Curtis Brown Ltd. Correspondence series, organized chronologically, consists of about 1500 items and includes letters to Lawrence, booksellers, agents, Curtis Brown's lawyers, and various other people involved in the publication and sale of Lawrence's writing. Also included are contracts with Frieda Lawrence for 1933 and 1934, as well as letters, financial statements and listings of copyright accounts sent to her after Lawrence's death. The Miscellaneous series consists of a wide variety of materials directly and indirectly related to Lawrence. A few personal items belonging to Lawrence--passports, address books, bank statements, check stubs--are included. However, the bulk of the series is made up of correspondence between other parties regarding Lawrence's work, transcripts from the American and English obscenity trials involving Lady Chatterley's Lover, and manuscripts of scholarly works about Lawrence. Noteable among the latter category are the complete notes and working manuscripts for F.W. Roberts' book, A Bibliography of D.H. Lawrence (1959).

Title:
Frieda Lawrence Collection, 1870-1969.
Manuscripts, correspondence, letters between her husbands and her mother, guest books, and telegrams of condolence on her death, make up the Frieda Lawrence Collection, 1870-1969. The Works series contains drafts of Lawrence's book NOT I, BUT THE WIND (1934) and portions of "And the Fullness Thereof," which was published in 1964 as FRIEDA LAWRENCE, THE MEMOIRS AND CORRESPONDENCE. Also included are a series of numbered notebooks and a diary in which Lawrence recorded her thoughts and philosophies throughout her life, as well as articles and essays, some about her life with D.H. Lawrence. While there is some business correspondence having to do with the copyrights and royalties from D.H. Lawrence's works, and the legal battles that occurred regarding his estate, the Letters and Recipient series consist mostly of Lawrence's personal letters to and from friends and family. Of note are the letters between Lawrence and Richard Aldington, Barbara Barr, Dorothy Brett, Witter Bynner, Otto Gross, Enid Hilton, Else Jaffe-Richthofen, Knud and Else Merrild, Mabel Dodge Luhan, John Murry, Angelo Ravagli, Anna von Richthofen, and Tennessee Williams. The Miscellaneous series is mostly composed of letters to and from people other than Lawrence, including several from D.H. Lawrence and Ernest Weekley to Anna von Richthofen. Also included are manuscripts by other authors including a few by D.H. Lawrence, Irving Ravetch's screenplay of SONS AND LOVERS, Elise Aylen's play based on THE PLUMED SERPENT, and part of M.E. Ross's A D.H. LAWRENCE ANTHOLOGY. Additionally, there are guest and address books, Lawrence's social security card, three passports, and a large collection of letters and postcards, written in German, from Baron Podewils to Anna von Richthofen spanning 1886-1912.

Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1929-1967.
Weyhe Gallery displayed works by Dorothy Brett early in her career. Her breathless letters to Zigrosser are full of the progress of her painting; details of life in Taos; difficulty of selling her work and placing it with dealers; praise of her work by John Marin, Alfred Stieglitz, and Awa Tsireh; the exploits of Georgia O'Keeffe, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Frieda von Richtofen Lawrence, and Rebecca Strand; memories of Katherine Mansfield and John Middleton Murry; her growing confidence in her painting; criticism of Aldous Huxley's book Point Counter Point; sharp comments on the death of D. H. Lawrence ("unmitigated stupidity"); the poor art market during the Depression and money trouble. After a silence of 32 years there was an exchange of letters in 1967.

Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1927-1974, n.d.
Cook's letters are almost entirely about the progress of his work, his exhibitions, and his travels across America. There are two fairly detailed biographical statements from 1928 and 1930. His early life with artist-wife Barbara Latham seems to have been self-contained, with little mention of social activities or other artists. Their years in Taxco, Mexico resulted in informative letters, detailing the community life among artists there, and the charms of rustic life in Mexico (1932-1934). As the Depression deepened, and paying work became harder to find, Cook joined with the American Artists Group, competed for WPA assignments as a muralist and travelled on a Guggenheim Fellowship just before the sta rt of World War II. Latham and Cook settled in Taos, and letters describe life there, travelling to Indian ceremonies with Ralph Flint and Dorothy Brett, meeting up with Andrew Dasburg and Georgia O'Keeffe. The War, and Zigrosser's departure from Weyhe Gallery, brought a break in Cook's career. After 1940, letters are often addressed to Laura Canadé at Weyhe Gallery (Canadé was Zigrosser's second wife), there are references to Frank K. M. Rehn Galleries, (Cook's new dealer), and to Cook's brief career as an Army artist war correspondent. Cook's letters after the war have a changed tone; his southwest subject matter and representational style were out of fashion, and Cook struggled with his career. He began teaching and mentions the art community and the work of other artists more often. He writes critically of his own work and his decision to leave Rehn Galleries for the Grand Central Moderns, a gallery with younger artists. His letters from the '60s mention Cook's increasing troubles with Multiple Sclerosis, his new work in collage, teaching, Barbara Latham's continued career, and a growing appreciation of the challenges he has faced in the past 20 years. The correspondence includes a quantity of printed matter concerning exhibitions and reproductions, as well as some photographs of Cook and Latham and some works of art.
