James Jackson (1757-1806), U.S. Senator and Georgia Governor (1798-1801) born in Moreton, England.
U.S. senator from Georgia, 1793-1795, 1801-1806, and governor of Georgia, 1798-1801.
James Jackson (1757-1806) was born in Devonshire, England. In 1772, he arrived in Savannah to study law. He fought for Georgia during the Revolutionary War, after which he became a member of the Georgia legislature. A member of the U.S. Senate since 1793, he left this position after the Yazoo fraud of 1795 and returned to Georgia's state legislature and organized an anti-Yazoo campaign. His efforts resulted in the Yazoo act's rescinding and the destruction of its records. In 1798, Jackson won the gubernatorial election. While in office (he held the position until 1801), Jackson ensured Georgia's political party status as a Jeffersonian state. He served his final term in the U.S. Senate from 1801 to 1806; he died March 19, 1806 in Washington, D.C.
James Jackson a Georgia politician who was a well known duelist with a fiery temper who built the Georgia Democratic-Republican party and led it to statewide dominance during the late eighteenth century. Jackson was born in Devonshire, England in 1757 and migrated to Savannah, Georgia in 1772. During the American Revolutionary War, he served in the Georgia militia and was active in the defense of Savannah, the Battle of Cowpens, and the recapture of Augusta and Savannah. Following the war, Jackson set up a law practice in Savannah and started a career in politics. Jackson was elected to the first Georgia state legislature and in 1788 was elected Governor of Georgia, but declined the position, citing his inexperience. In 1789, he was elected to the first United States Congress and strongly opposed any efforts to end slavery and Alexander Hamilton's, the Secretary of the Treasury, financial plans for federals assumption of state debts from the Revolutionary War. In the election of 1791, Jackson was defeated for reelection by Anthony Wayne and was convinced that Wayne had not won his seat fairly. This led Jackson to mount a campaign against Wayne and his supporters, which ultimately led to the removal of Wayne from Congress. Jackson was elected to the United States Senate in 1793 and during this time the state of Georgia sold a large portion its western lands, called Yazoo, to a group of investors. Jackson believed that this sale was influenced by bribery of state legislatures and resigned his post in the Senate to run for a seat in the Georgia legislature in 1795. He won the election and immediately organized a campaign to repeal the Yazoo land sale. In 1798, Jackson won the election for governor of Georgia and proceeded to implement the legislation to repeal the Yazoo land sale and placed the blame for the Yazoo land fraud on his political enemies, the Federalists. Jackson was reelected to the Senate in 1801 and served until his death in 1806.
Brigadier general in Revolution, U.S. representative (1789-1791) and senator (1793-1795) from Georgia, governor of Georgia (1798-1801).

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

Georgia. Executive Council. Georgia Executive Council papers, 1777-1788.
Title:
Georgia Executive Council papers, 1777-1788.
This collection consists of the minutes, resolutions, and an order of the Georgia Executive Council, 1777-1788. Allen D. Candler in the Prefatory Note of his The Revolutionary Records of the State of Georgia (Atlanta, 1908), I, 3, states that the minutes of the Council prior to January 1778 were lost. This was thought to be the case until the early minute book was found at the Georgia Historical Society in the 1940s during an organization of its manuscripts collection. The resolution in this collection appoints Edward Telfair and James Jackson to attend a treaty with the Creek Indians at Galphinton. The order is a detailed return by all counties of Indian depredations since January, 1787, extracted from the minutes.

Title:
Papers of Alexander H. H. Stuart and the related Stuart and Baldwin families [manuscript], 1776-1878 (bulk 1850-1861).
The collection contains the political correspondence of Alexander H.H. Stuart, particularly from 1850-1853, when he served in Fillmore's cabinet and from 1857-1861, when he was in the Virginia State Senate. The Whig Party is a major topic. Other topics include national and Virginia politics, the presidential elections of 1848, 1852, and 1868, the reestablishment of a national bank, the Virginia Reform Convention of 1850, the American Know-Nothing Party, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Also slavery, abolition, Southern conservative opposition to secession, Virginia elections of 1831, 1851, 1859, 1867, the aftermath of Nat Turner's rebellion, the use of statistics in government, the Confederate Congress, sectional reconciliation after the Civil War, the Readjustor controversy, political patronage, and internal improvements. Also mentioned are Revolutionary War pension claims, migration of free blacks to Liberia, affairs at the Chickasaw and Choctaw Indian Agency in 1851, California politics and Indians in 1851, the Tehuantepec Isthmus route, Iowa in 1851, San Francisco in 1854, New Orleans in 1861, West Virginia in 1861, the U.S.S. Princeton explosion, Dorothea Dix's efforts to establish hospitals for the mentally ill, building of the U.S. Capitol, the Virginia Central Railroad and the University of Virginia. Many letters convey local news in Staunton and Augusta County, Va., such as the development of Alum Springs, the establishment of the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind, smallpox cases and land sales and controversies in Virginia and Kentucky. Others refer to legal cases handled by Stuart, including suits involving the Bath Iron Works and Buffalo Forge, and the Wheeling Bridge. Several letters discuss family affairs including plans by a cousin to run a boarding house for young women in Athens, Greece. Only a few letters mention the Civil War and Reconstruction and include references to the military movements of Confederate general Robert S. Garnett. Topics in earlier Stuart and the related Baldwin family papers include ratification of the U.S. constitution, Jeffersonian party politics, political events during the administration of George Washington, Washington Academy, the University of Virginia and its honor system, Washington College, and William Wirt's biography of Patrick Henry. The papers also contain an architectural drawing of an unidentified house, an engraving of Alexander H.H. Baldwin, Abraham, 1754-1807. Abraham Baldwin papers, circa 1770-1808.
Title:
Abraham Baldwin papers, circa 1770-1808.
The collection consists of documents generated between (circa) 1770 and 1818, as well as numerous undated documents. These documents have been organized in the following series: Addresses, Correspondence, Invitations and Notices: These 43 items are arranged alphabetically first by type, and within the correspondence, by author. In the case of multiple same-party correspondence, the items are arranged chronologically. Of particular interest is correspondence with/from John Adams, Peter and Obadiah Crawford, William Few, William Findley, John Habersham, William Hull, James Jackson, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Lyman, Jared Mansfield, and Timothy Pickering. Two letters from S. Hammond to Baldwin regarding life in St. Louis in 1806 are insightful into frontier conditions, and there are likewise two letters (Patterson to Logan) which discuss a query by Baldwin as to the nature of the pendulum. Finally, there is an undated fragment of a letter warning of excessive ambition in General Washington's aide-de-camp. Legislative Documents: Thirty-one documents comprise this series, which is generally ordered chronologically, with non-dated documents following those with actual or assigned dates. These papers compass a broad range of legislative issues, including foreign policy initiatives, land disputes, state and federal legislative processes and statutes, Revolutionary War service claims, acts pertaining to the State University, proposals for a national militia and national academy, treaties, navigation law, and duties and taxation. There is also a Report on the State of the Republic, dated 1806. Fiscal Documents: These five documents touch on both Georgia and Federal debt analysis, land purchase, and federal budget analysis. Miscellaneous Documents: The final nine documents are widely divergent, including Baldwin Journal entries, his book of accounts for the years 1800-1806, Baldwin essays on the right of revolt against England, natural law, and the nature of the federal constitution. There are also his Observations on the Literature of Georgia, extracts from Joel Barlow's Commonplace Book, and a hand-drawn map of Georgia which appears to date from the last decade of the 18th Century, though it is undated.

Albert J. Pickett papers, 1779-1904
Title:
Albert J. Pickett papers, 1779-1904
The Albert J. Pickett Papers form approximately one-half of the Pickett Family Papers, LPR185. The History of Alabama series is the largest series within the Albert J. Pickett Papers, and it contains letters and manuscripts Pickett received from numerous prominent individuals in the course of writing his book. Some people sent Pickett their reminiscences of major events, while a few sent Pickett documents from the late 1700s and early 1800s. The Creek Indian War of 1813-1814 is particularly well-documented. Many of the letters advised Pickett of potential sources of information. Most of the letters and manuscripts were bound together in two volumes by Pickett. This series also includes drafts of the book. The correspondence series contains letters from Pickett to family members, chiefly his wife. Several of the letters were written in 1851 when he travelled to New York and Charleston to arrange the publication of the History of Alabama. The scrapbook, clippings, and speeches series contains a scrapbook assembled by Pickett of articles he wrote and articles about his History of Alabama. Most of the clippings and speeches not in his scrapbook are transcriptions.
