James Barron Hope was born 23 March 1829 in Norfolk, Virginia. He was the grandson of Commodore James Barron (1769-1851) and son of Wilton Hope and Jane Armistead (Barron) Hope (1791-1862). James Barron Hope graduated from the College of William and Mary. He practiced law and was the commonwealth's attorney for Norfolk. He married Annie Beverley Whiting (1825-1920) in 1857. The couple had two daughters, Jane ("Janey" or "Jennie") Barron Hope (b. 1859?) and Ann ("Nanny") Hope. James Barron Hope is known primarily for his poetry, serving as the official poet of the 250th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement. He published several volumes of writings and also edited newspapers. Hope died in 1887.
John Bankhead Magruder (May 1, 1807 – February 19, 1871), a native of Port Royal, VA, submitted this requisition during his time as a general for the Confederate Army. Magruder had previously served in the US Army, and would later serve with the Imperial Mexican Army. He is known for his efforts in the 1862 Peninsula Campaign and in successfully defending Galveston, Texas, against the Union Army and Navy early in 1863.

Ballinger, William Pitt, papers, 1815-1909.
This collection, produced and collected by William Pitt Ballinger (1825-1888), soldier, attorney, and businessman of Galveston, Texas, remains one of the outstanding sources of documentation for nineteenth-century Texan and Southern development and history. The papers are equally valuable for the study of the extended family and prominent associates of Ballinger. The papers are particularly rich in documentary value for the post-1850 period when Ballinger served as United States district attorney for the Texas District and later when he opened his private practice. Many of them relate to the financial and legal affairs of Galveston businesses and antebellum plantations in southeast Texas. A large number of the papers document Ballinger's service as Confederate States receiver for Galveston during the Civil War. His voluminous correspondence with Texan and Southern officials and with officers and men in Confederate service are also reflected here. Many of the papers from the post-Civil War period relate to his involvement with railroads in Texas and to other business and civic affairs of Ballinger and his associates in Galveston. His personal diary (1854-1886), which is accompanied by a typed transcription and an index, contains much information about that city. The papers include correspondence, diaries, literary productions, business papers, legal papers, pamphlets, broadsides, and other printed items, newspaper clippings, maps, and a photograph.

Correspondence, land titles, power of attorney, patent, surveyor's sketch, and photographs comprise the Walter L. Mann Papers. Three letters from Hamilton Bee in Havana, Cuba, to Walter Mann in Galveston, Texas, 1865-1866, concern Bee's move from Mexico to Cuba, the possibility of Bee's pardon in the United States, Bee's request for a loan from Mann, and the financial status and activities of "Tip" (John George) Walker and John Bankhead Magruder. Two autograph copies of letters, both dated May 25, 1865, deal with the armistice of Galveston and the safe passage to New Orleans for Ashbel Smith and W.P. Ballinger, Texas Commissioners. One letter is written by Captain B.F. Sands of the United States Nnavy to General Magruder, the other from Col. Ashbel Smith to Capt. E.P. Turner. The remainder of the papers are legal documents that record transactions concerning properties near San Felipe, Texas, 1824-1859. Two of the land titles are partially in Spanish. A surveyor's sketch is drawn on linen. The photographs are 8 x 10" inch prints of portraits of Walter Mann and Eliza Mann.

Title:
Zachariah A. Rice Correspondence and Military Commission, 1861-1862.
This collection contains 63 letters and Zachariah A. Rice's military commission to the rank of Major. The letters were written mostly from Zachariah to his wife living in Atlanta, Georgia; however some of her replies are included. Rice primarily wrote from Camp Marion in Virginia, but other locations include Richmond and Petersburg, Virginia and Camp Randolph, North Carolina. He describes the life of an officer in the Confederate army, including living conditions and duties. He warns his wife about the destruction caused by Federal soldiers as they move through Confederate cities. Rice declares that the Confederate Army draws good rations and has an abundance of food in early 1861, but in the letters from 1862 he writes that the land is being depleted, supplies have become scarce and life is not as agreeable for soldiers anymore. These letters briefly mention battles at Fort Henry, Roanoke Island, Fort Donalson, Malvern Hill and the naval battle at the James River. In May of 1862 he discusses the rumored surrenders at Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia and proposes that traitors in the Confederate Government are responsible for the shameful suggestion of surrender. Rice provides a detailed description of the Battle of Seven Pines/Fair Oaks that took place on May 31, 1862. During the battle there was daily shelling of both camps, many prisoners were taken, and the Confederates captured General McClellan's supplies. He states that while a three hour truce took place the soldiers exchanged possessions and discussed politics, abolition, and Abraham Lincoln. Throughout these letters Rice continually mentions the religious life in his camp and his encounters with citizens of Atlanta who have moved to Virginia.

Contained in the W. Gray series are a handwritten Constitution of the Philosophical Society of Texas, a letter from James Madison, and an oath of allegiance to Texas made before Gray. A transcript of Millie Gray's diary covers the time period of 1832 to 1840. In the P. Gray series are correspondence with Nathan Fuller and Jefferson Davis in 1862, and a key to the writing of a Galveston secret society. "Notes on the Occurrences of 1842" and the journal excerpt from the same year are believed to have been written by P. Gray. Documents collected by the Gray family include correspondence of Sam Houston documenting 1830s and 1840s Texas, Andrew Jackson on Texas annexation in 1844, Confederate governor of Texas Francis R. Lubbock concerning martial law in Texas, and early Texas jurist and diplomat George W. Terrell, writing to Ashbel Smith and Lord Aberdeen of Britain. A hand-drawn map documents the Texan defenses at Fort Defiance in Goliad in 1836. Printed materials include a copy of Col. Travis' March 3, 1836 letter from the Alamo, "An Ordinance" covers the planned secession of Texas, and "General orders," of General Magruder on the export of cotton from Texas.
