Confederate colonel and Galveston lawyer Walter L. Mann was born in Holmes County, Mississippi, December 16, 1838. In 1840 his family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, the most remote white settlement on the western Gulf Coast of Texas. Mann attended the University of Virginia until 1857, when the death of his father compelled him to return to Corpus Christi and assume the charge of the estate. B.F. Sands served as a navy lieutenant in the Mexican War, participating in operations on the Grijalva River under Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry. He later served in the Civil War and as director of the Naval Observatory, 1867-1874. Sands was made rear admiral in 1871, and he retired in 1874. He died in Washington, D.C., in 1883. James Barron Hope was born 23 March 1829 in Norfolk, Virginia. He was the grandson of Commodore James Barron (1769-1851) and son of Wilton Hope and Jane Armistead (Barron) Hope (1791-1862).
