English poet.
Edward Young was a poet, dramatist and satirist, born at Upham near Winchester. He was the son of Edward Young, the rector of Upham, (who was later Dean of Salisbury and chaplain to William and Mary). In 1702 Young went to New College, Oxford, but moved to Corpus Christi, and then to a law fellowship at All Souls in 1708. After failing to obtain sufficient patronage or preferment, Young took holy orders when in his forties, becoming chaplain to George II in 1728. He received the living of Welwyn, which was in the gift of All Souls, in 1731, and remained there until his death at the age of 81

Title:
[Commonplace book], 1765 and later.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of over a hundred primarily religious and moral entries, though the manuscript also includes a significant amount of secular items. The religious entries include excerpts from published religious reflections and brief biographies of religious figures such as those by Cotton Mather; Jeremiah Burroughs; and Anthony Wood; as well as a large collection of aphorisms. The manuscript also contains excerpts from the poetry of John Dryden; William Shakespeare; Beaumont and Fletcher; Edward Young's Night Thoughts; Verses written by Samuel Davies, president of the college at Princeton, New Jersey, on the birth of his son; and numerous verse epitaphs. Elsewhere, Bromehead records John Wesley's General rules of Kingswood School; Rules at the foundling hospital London; and Rules for health. At the end of the manuscript is an obituary for Rev. Thomas Richard, dated 1798, appended by a note by Bromehead on his friend.

Title:
Letter, 1755 Sept 20, [to Samuel Richardson]
Autograph letter from Edward Young, presumably written to Samuel Richardson. The poem mentions recieving a recent letter from Mr Millar, and refers to Mrs Richardson and the Richardson's household staff. The letter also mentions that Young is sending along a song he has written, which is perhaps the draft version of "The sailor's song to the south" that was purchased with this letter, and is now housed and cataloged separately as ba MS.2010.013.
