A 1927 West Point graduate, Laurence Kuter transferred to the Air Corps in 1930. In 1941 he was one of the principal authors of the basic plan for employment of air power in World War II and he then took command of a bomber wing in England. After tours of duty in North Africa, Washington, D.C. and the Pacific Ocean Area, Kuter was promoted to major general. He participated in a series of combined Chief of Staff Conferences at Quebec, Cairo, and London. When General Arnold became suddenly and seriously ill in 1945, General Kuter was designated as his representative to attend the Yalta and Malta Conferences. He held a series of senior commands during the 1950s, including the North American Air Defense Command. He retired in 1962 to become a vice-president of Pan American World Airways and, later, a consultant to the aviation industry.

This series consists of photographs compiled by Thor Merritt Smith during his lifetime. Most of the photographs are from Smith’s service in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, during which he was an intelligence, and then public relations, officer. Some of the family photos were taken upon Thor Smith’s return home from service. Additionally, the series includes a set of eight photographs taken by Mary Benton Smith on a trip she took to the Philippines in 1966. Other subjects appearing in the photographs of this series include: B-17 bombers, bombs, Christmas, GMC Duck, journalism, journalists, and war correspondents.
