Jones's notebook contains signed entries for ca. 269 fellow Confederate prisoners, many of whom were captured at the Battle of Gettysburg. Each officer recorded his name, home town, regiment, and date and place of capture. Among the signees are Confederate generals Isaac R. Trimble, James J. Archer, John R. Jones, John Wesley Frazer, Meriwether Thompson, and William N.R. Beall, and majors William Carvell Hall and Henry Kyd Douglas.

Papers of Meriwether Jeff Thompson include about 70 Confederate rosters and muster rolls, chiefly of the Army of the Northern Sub-District of Arkansas; Thompson's manuscript autobiography and reminiscences of the Civil War years; correspondence while in active service and as a federal prisoner at Johnsons Island; a Confederate cipher invented by Thompson; and an autograph book. Other papers include correspondence while Thompson was living in New Orleans; accounts, 1866-1867, of the Southern Hospital Association of New Orleans; two speeches during the secession crisis while he was mayor of Saint Joseph, Mo.; and other items, including newspaper articles on the Pony Express.

Morgan, Alfred Dexter. Diaries 1864-1866.

Title: Diaries 1864-1866.

Two autograph volumes of a diary kept by Alfred Dexter Morgan during his service with the 17th Illinois Cavalry Volunteers in 1864 and 1865. Morgan and his company saw duty primarily in Missouri, but was also stationed in Kansas at the end of the war. Missouri experienced some of the most bitter conflict due to sectionalism and protracted guerrilla warfare, and Morgan's diary speaks of the events occuring at that time. Mentioned in the diary are such notarious bushwhackers as Charles Quantrill and "Bloody Bill" Anderson, along with Confederate Generals Sterling Price and M. Jeff Thompson. At the end of the second volume is a personnel list for the company (D) including those who deserted, died and the home towns of each member. Morgan is listed as a recruit from Chicago and a sergeant. The 17th Illinois Cavalry Volunteers was organized at St. Charles in January, 1864 and was mustered out of service January 1, 1866.

They include reports of operations against the enemy, September-December, 1862, submitted by unit commanders to Confederate H.Q., Trans-Mississippi Department, Little Rock (Ark.); seven lists of Confederate prisoners paroled by the Union Army at Richmond (Va.) in April 1865, and a roll of prisoners released from Libby Prison on April 10, 1865; miscellaneous general orders; morning reports of various Confederate prisons and hospitals; muster rolls; returns of clothing and provisions; certificates; military passes; requisitions; applications for exemption from military service; papers connected with the arrest of a deserter; telegrams and official correspondence, including a letter from Brigadier General M. Jeff. Thompson to Daniel Ruggles; and a register of people passing over Charleston New Bridge on June 1, 1863. Non-military documents include some official correspondence from the State of South Carolina; papers relating to the settlement of an estate in Georgia; a list of people sworn in as Confederate citizens in the Eastern District of Virginia; numerous blank forms related to Confederate tax or post office business; a bond issued by the Confederacy; some personal correspondence, with occasional manuscript maps; and a typescript recording the experiences of Leonidas Sebastian Daniel as a Confederate Army telegrapher in Vicksburg, 1861-1863, as condensed by his daughter, Louise C.
