Meriwether Jeff Thompson papers, 1860-1940 [manuscript].

Papers of Meriwether Jeff Thompson include about 70 Confederate rosters and muster rolls, chiefly of the Army of the Northern Sub-District of Arkansas; Thompson's manuscript autobiography and reminiscences of the Civil War years; correspondence while in active service and as a federal prisoner at Johnsons Island; a Confederate cipher invented by Thompson; and an autograph book. Other papers include correspondence while Thompson was living in New Orleans; accounts, 1866-1867, of the Southern Hospital Association of New Orleans; two speeches during the secession crisis while he was mayor of Saint Joseph, Mo.; and other items, including newspaper articles on the Pony Express.
