English author.
Samuel Richardson (1689-1761) was raised in Derbyshire and became a printer in London. He published three novels: Pamela (1740), Clarissa (1747), and Sir Charles Grandison (1753).
Author.
Samuel Richardson was born in Mackworth, Derbyshire. Since his family could not give him much education, he was apprenticed in the printing trade. By 1721 he had his own print shop. In 1733 he became printer to the House of Commons, which gave him financial security and allowed him to begin writing the novels for which he is best known: Pamela (1740); Clarissa (1747); and The History of Sir Charles Grandison (1754). He died of a stroke in 1761.

Title:
Papers chiefly relating to Thomas Chatterton, 1671-1782.
Manuscript, in multiple hands, of a collection of 47 items divided into three sections. The first section consists of 14 poems, extracts, and notes, primarily on antiquarian subjects. The verses in the first section include a Latin poem titled Odeum oxoniense; a poem addressed to Thebes; a verse dialogue between two shepherds titled The eagle & wren, or Thomas & Richard, a pastoral dialogue; a poem addressed to Thomas Tyrwhitt; and an extract of a letter from Alexander Pope to Samuel Richardson which includes a poem "found in a glass window in the village of Chalfort Bucks." The first section also contains an excerpt from Gerard Langbaine on Ben Jonson; a list of payments to poets copied from the accounts of Henry VII's privy purse; an excerpt from Tobias Smollett's history of England; notes on Latin and medieval French and their relationship to Chaucer; and notes concerning Chaucer's Dreme of Chaucer. The second section contains 23 letters, notes, drawings, and transcripts relating to Thomas Chatterton and the Rowley controversy. These items include numerous documents in Chatterton's hand, including Happiness-a poem; A fragment of sermon on the holy spirit in medieval English; and 10 drawings, some printed, of medieval buildings and tombstones, including that of Robertes Canyng. The section also includes several items by George Catcott, such as a notebook with marbled covers signed George Catcott January 1, 1776, which consists of his notes to a book on Chatterton; and a copy of Chatterton's poem The tournament, an interlude, with a note by Tyrwhitt to the printer. The remainder of this section consists of letters from various scholars to Tyrwhitt discussing the Rowley controversy. These scholars include Thomas Warton, Jeremiah Milles, William Cole, and Dr. Percy. The third section contains 10 letters, several of which are addressed to Tyrwhitt, many on literary matters, including the meaning of the word "churl"; accented syllables in Milton's and others' poetry; and commentaries on John Dryden, Alexander Pope, and Joseph Addison. Other items include a social letter from Richard Hurd, bishop of Worcester, to Dr. Hough; a letter from Nicholas Harding discussing the King's right to levy taxes, and containing extracts from Hale's Prerogativa Regis; and two drawings of plans for tracts of land surveyed in Jamaica, signed by Henry Wornull in 1671.

Autograph letter signed : London, to [Benjamin Kennicott], 1754 Oct. 18.
Richardson's letter to an unnamed recipient [Benjamin Kennicott] discusses his own and John Swinton's parts in the Universal History. Swinton's contribution included an attack on George Sale's Koran: "Mr Swinton was not to write a dissertation on the Koran, or its Merits or Demerits; but the History of its Author." As a contributor to the History, "Mr Sale was not thought blameable by the Public; and his Name and Management gave reputation to the Work. What need of such Pains ... to decry both?... Surely the Proprietors of a very expensive Work, who run all the Risque, ought to be allowed to be Judges of what they pay for, and are to set their Names to." Richardson goes on to complain of Swinton's behaviour in a private dispute: "Was this worthy of the Gentleman and Scholar?" Richardson explains that he has written no letters to Swinton: "Just freed from a work which has cost me much Time and Trouble, I was desiring to take leave of the Pen ...."

Autograph letter from Edward Young, presumably written to Samuel Richardson. The poem mentions recieving a recent letter from Mr Millar, and refers to Mrs Richardson and the Richardson's household staff. The letter also mentions that Young is sending along a song he has written, which is perhaps the draft version of "The sailor's song to the south" that was purchased with this letter, and is now housed and cataloged separately as ba MS.2010.013.

History of the Seven Years' War, 1756-1762.
Title:
History of the Seven Years' War, 1756-1762.
Manuscript, in a single hand, with many corrections, of a history of the Seven Years' War, focusing on British actions and policies from the declaration of war against the French in 1756 to the preliminary articles of peace in November 1762, divided into 16 stitched fascicles. The first 9 fascicles, from 1756-1760, present the history in narrative form. In addition to accounts of European battles, this section includes an account of French actions in North America in 1760, including Canada and especially regarding relations with Native Americans; a note which records a poem by the poet-laureate William Whitehead in 1760 celebrating the events of that year; a mention of casualties in the "black troops in the English service" at the battle of Wandiwash in India in 1759; an account of the tumult in London over an infestation of mad dogs in 1760 and of the symptoms of an infected man; and a description of the death of George II in 1760, with a reflection on the achievements and flaws of his life. The last 7 fascicles are a collection of copies of letters, dated from London from 1761 to 1762, reporting on events of the Seven Years' War, as well as commenting on current political and social events in London. The letters report on activities in Europe and India; the war against Spain; a conspiracy formed at Bermuda "by the negroes there"; the battle and surrender of Havana; and the preliminary peace negotations. The writer also reports the deaths of Bishop Benjamin Hoadly of Winchester, the chemist Joshua Ward, and Samuel Richardson; notes the town's surprise at the news of the king's announcement of marriage to Sophia Charlotte; describes her dress and appearance at her marriage ceremony; describes the king's coronation in 1761; and mentions a tax on windows as well as unseasonable weather. Many letters in 1761 pertain to the resignation of William Pitt, in which the writer criticizes the hypocrisy of Pitt's acceptance of a peerage and pension. Although unsigned, the letters occasionally mention personal details such as references to the correspondent's brother's illness. The manuscript is prefaced by an introduction in which the author explains that the work was begun for his amusement, but that he soon realized the difficulty of attempting a historical account while the facts were still recent and therefore decided to put the facts in an epistolary form which allowed him to provide context for them. Accompanying the manuscript are two stitched fascicles of notes from Milton's History of Britain , and one harrating English history and politics from the death of Charles I to the Rye House Plot.

Temple, William Johnston, 1739-1796. Letters: to Sir William Johnston Temple, 1763-1794.
Title:
Letters: to Sir William Johnston Temple, 1763-1794.
Manuscripts, in two hands, of 65 letters addressed to William Johnston Temple, primarily from his friend Norton Nicholls and his wife, Anne (Stow) Temple, though the collection also includes several letters from "J. Clarke" as well as one from his mother and father; one from Edward Charles Dilly; and one from Anne Temple to her aunt. Nicholls' letters discuss university life; his social activities with Thomas Gray; and descriptions of Temple's publications and of his own travels through England, Europe, and Scotland and visits to friends. In 1770, he relays Gray's answer to Temple's antiquarian query. He also mentions current events, discussing a session of the House of Lords and the Rockingham administration in 1770; being in the Army; speculating about an impending war based on the treaty between France and America in 1778; deploring the savagery of the Jacobins in 1792; and discussing Robespierre and the English military in 1794. He also frequently mentions his reading, praising Richardson's Clarissa but pronouncing Madame de Sevigne tedious, and mentioning Horace Walpole's poor opinion of a "fumbling antiquarian." In vol. 1, dated 1763, are two letters from Nicholls describing his visit to Walpole at Strawberry Hill, where he takes special note of the throngs of visitors to the estate and describes the view. The letters from Temple's wife focus primarily on domestic and personal matters; she expresses her loneliness and disappointment at being apart from him; complains about her ill health; describes the difficulties of raising children as well as their daily activities; and instructs him to purchase various items for them, including linens, ribbons, and toys. Occasionally she also mentions correspondence with the family of James Boswell. Two letters from vol. 1 are housed separately under LWL Mss File 10.
