In his [1868] address [1 page fragment], Tutwiler begins to discuss the privilege of voting, and recounts how he always treated his own slaves justly. A typed transcript of the address is included. The collection also contains a letter, 1869 April 8, Lexington, Va. from Robert E. Lee to Tutwiler concerning a note of thanks to George Long for a presentation copy of his translation of the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius Antonius, a 1912 letter from John Shelton Patton to Thomas McCovey thanking him for his paper on Tutwiler and two 1916 letters from Thomas Fitzhugh concerning the loan of Tutwiler's letters and the use of an article on Tutwiler.

This addition to the papers of the Gregory and related Whitmore families consists primarily of letters from Mrs. Sue [Mary Susan] Gregory Whitmore to her son Harry Gregory Whitmore, a student at the University of Virginia and teacher at various colleges. The letters chiefly convey news of family, friends and local happenings (and scandals) in Parnassus, Va., with occasional references to national events. Topics of interest include her reading; railroad work in Augusta County; Harry Whitmore's student life at the University of Virginia with many references to Virginia professors; and farming in Augusta County with references to trouble with hired hands. University of Virginia faculty and administrators mentioned include E.A. Alderman, Noah K. Davis, Francis P. Dunnington, Charles W. Kent, John W. Mallet, James M. Page, John S. Patton, William E. Peters, William B. Stone, William M. Thornton, and Christopher Wright. There are passing references to the African-Americans in Augusta County including their vote in the election of 1900; the death of her husband from tuberculoses; the St. Louis Worlds Fair; Southern votes and the election of 1904; the 1912 women's suffrage fight in the Virginia legislature; prohibition; outbreaks of contagious diseases including the great flu epidemic; and World War I. Letters from Samuel L. Whitmore to his brother Harry concern his chiropractic career, medical schooling, financial problems and divorce. The collection also contains the 1915 travel journal of Harry Whitmore kept on a trip to California via the Panama Canal with a return home through the Canadian Rockies together with letters and postcards related to his trip. The collection also contains receipts; photographs; and a scrapbook of the 1883 Niagara Falls Reunion of the Fifth Virginia Infantry and the 28th New York Volunteers who had faced each other at the Battle of Cedar Mountain.

There are also rough drafts of statistics, possibly used for the compilation of the annual report to the state; advertising contracts; draft of a faculty resolution; the Law School report for Sept./ Oct., 1902; and a draft of a faculty address on the use of space in the new buildings: "no amount of architectural beauty will atone for lack of adaptation to the purposes for which these buildings are erected." Century Company records
Title:
Century Company records
The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

Topics of interest include an outbreak of typhoid fever and Virginia Military Institute; an incorrect smallpox diagnosis of a Charlottesville resident; proposals by photographers Rhodes & Carter, R. W. Holsinger, and J. F. Wampler to provide photographs of the University; and a resolution in honor of Walter Reed. There are also rough drafts of statistics, possibly used for the compilation of the annual report to the state; advertising contracts; draft of a faculty resolution; the Law School report for Sept./ Oct., 1902; and a draft of a faculty address on the use of space in the new buildings: "no amount of architectural beauty will atone for lack of adaptation to the purposes for which these buildings are erected." Correspondents include H. C. Marchant, John S. Patton, Paul J. Pelz, John J. Moran, James M. Page, Harrison Randolph, and Edward L. Stone.

The papers consist chiefly of McCabe's correspondence with prominent scholars, U.S. and British literary figures, and Civil War veterans. Topics include the Civil War, the Confederacy, Confederate veterans organizations, World War I, black suffrage, the University of Virginia, and British literature. Of particular interest are accounts of the destruction of Hampton and the seizing of the powder magazine at Norfolk, accounts of the Meuse-Argonne offensive, and of Australian troops in Egypt, the retaining of Robert E. Lee's body in Lexington, Swedenborgianism in 1864, and Einstein's theory of relativity in 1920, the Rotunda fire, changes in the University of Virginia's degree program, and a controversy regarding professor William Howard Perkinson. Also of interest are a letter of Robert E. Lee on William Johnson Pegram, a letter of recommendation from Matthew Arnold, three pages of Thackeray's "The Virginians," a sonnet of Egerton Webbe copied and annotated by Leigh Hunt, two pages from John Richard Green's "Short history of the English people," Edmund Clarence Stedman's "The old admiral," and a poem on being seasick written in imitation of Tennyson by John Reuben Thompson. Tennyson items include a letter,1884 Aug 20 from Audrey Tennyson, brief social letters 1884 Nov 26 and 1888 Feb 12 from Lord Tennyson, a copy of "Carmen Saeculare, an Ode in Honor of the Jubilee of Queen Victoria," sent to McCabe, 1887 Aug 19, and a quotation by Tennyson, 1889 Aug 8. The papers also contain COPIES of letters including Edgar Allan Poe to John Collins McCabe critiquing a poem by McCabe; Thomas Jefferson to Francis Walker Gilmer re Gilmer's mission to obtain University of Virginia professors abroad; visits to Tennyson by McCabe, 1884 and 1887; Anne Isabella Thackeray Ritchie on her father's writing habits and a note to her from Robert Browning; Henry James on a promised volume and his "busy scribbling autumn"; and a letter of Stonewall Jackson to Robert E. Lee re the impending battle of Chancellorsville. There are papers, 1757-1796, of McCabe's ancestor George Taylor chiefly re his iron business in Easton, Pennsylvania including a plat of the site of present day Pittston, Pennsylvania, 1771. In addition there are class rolls from McCabe's University School, "The old Virginia gentleman" by George William Bagby, an autograph book, 1905 - 1908, an address book, 1920, and a replica of the great seal of the Confederacy, 1911.

They are : an incomplete draft transcription of letters, 1900-1919, from Mary Susan Gregory Whitmore to her son Harry Gregory Whitmore; "A History of Unbaffled Virginians by William Mulford / Dedicated to The Unflagging Will and Determination of Women Descendants of William Howson Clark"; and "Trip to California, Going Thru The Panama Canal and Returning Thru The Canadian Rockies [July-August 1915], a diary by Harry Gregory Whitmore. Sue Gregory Whitmore's letters to her son, a student and then professor at various colleges, contain personal, family and local Parnassus, Va., news and touch on state and national events. She writes in detail about her farm in Augusta County and other family members, and records all the books she reads. She mentions many University of Virginia professors including James Morris Page, John Shelton Patton, John William Mallet, William Elisha Peters, Christopher Wright, Noah Knowles Davis, Charles William Kent, Francis Perry Dunnington, William Beverley Stone, William Mynn Thornton and E.A. Alderman. She also describes trips, particularly to the St. Louis Fair in 1904. Local blacks are occasionally mentioned.
