Papers of the Gregory and related Whitmore family [manuscript], 1990-1993.

The papers consist of three computer printouts. They are : an incomplete draft transcription of letters, 1900-1919, from Mary Susan Gregory Whitmore to her son Harry Gregory Whitmore; "A History of Unbaffled Virginians by William Mulford / Dedicated to The Unflagging Will and Determination of Women Descendants of William Howson Clark"; and "Trip to California, Going Thru The Panama Canal and Returning Thru The Canadian Rockies [July-August 1915], a diary by Harry Gregory Whitmore. Sue Gregory Whitmore's letters to her son, a student and then professor at various colleges, contain personal, family and local Parnassus, Va., news and touch on state and national events. She writes in detail about her farm in Augusta County and other family members, and records all the books she reads. She mentions many University of Virginia professors including James Morris Page, John Shelton Patton, John William Mallet, William Elisha Peters, Christopher Wright, Noah Knowles Davis, Charles William Kent, Francis Perry Dunnington, William Beverley Stone, William Mynn Thornton and E.A. Alderman. She also describes trips, particularly to the St. Louis Fair in 1904. Local blacks are occasionally mentioned.
