Author. Full name: Philip Milton Roth. Born 1933.
Philip Roth is a popular and critically acclaimed American novelist. His observations on the Jewish experience in America, as depicted in such works as Goodbye, Columbus, and Portnoy's Complaint, show inventiveness and a singular sense of humor. Some observers find his works unnecessarily scatalogical and self-indulgent, others as an honest portrayal of the author's experiences and observations. One of the guiding themes in his work is a search for a personal and cultural identity.

Papers, 1940-1990 (inclusive), 1968-1990 (bulk).
Correspondence, literary manuscripts, journals, scrapbooks, printed material, photographs, and sound recordings either created or collected by the poet James Dickey. The material in this collection dates from the 1940's to 1990, with the largest concentration dating from the years 1968-1990. The collection includes hundreds of drafts of poems as well as drafts of his first two novels and other prose writings (often typescripts with corrections in Dickey's hand). The earliest literary manuscripts date from the early 1950's when Dickey was still an unpublished poet. All of his collections of poems from the 1970s and 1980s (among them, The Zodiac, The Strength of Fields, Puella, Värmland, False Youth: Four Seasons, Night Hurdling, and The Eagle's Mile) are represented, while collections from the 1960's are often present in carbon form. Drafts of Deliverance (both the novel and the screenplay) and Alnilam are also present (the later supplemented with research material). The large files of correspondence include letters both to and from Dickey. Notable correspondents include: Stanley Burnshaw, Pat Conroy, John Logan, Robert Lowell, Andrew Nelson Lytle, John Montague, Willie Morris, Philip Roth, William Styron, Peter Hillsman Taylor, Diane Wakoski, Robert Penn Warren, and James Arlington Wright. There are also large numbers of letters from other literary associates, as well as from friends and family.

Title:
George P. Garrett Papers, 1929-2008 (bulk 1960-2000)
George P. Garrett (1929-2008) was a poet, editor, author, and professor of English. The papers of George P. Garrett span the years 1929 to 2000 with the bulk of the material being dated between 1960 and 1990. The papers were initially collected and assembled by author, bibliographer, and publisher Stuart T. Wright. Wright published a number of Garrett's works at his Palaemon Press and also assembled the Stuart Wright Bibliographic Collection of George Garrett (see related materials held by the Rubenstein Library). Additional materials were received by the Library directly from George Garrett. The papers document Garrett's literary career as an author of novels, short stories, poetry, and dramatic works (including filmscripts) and the tremendous influence he had as an English professor and an editor on an entire generation of writers, particularly in the South. Correspondence with numerous authors, publishers, and educators offers much information about the history of 20th-century Southern literature, publishing, and literary education. The collection is divided into the Writings Series (with subseries of Writings by Garrett, Writings Edited by Garrett, Writings by Others, and Proofs); the Correspondence Series (with 5 subseries of alphabetically and chronologically arranged correspondence); the Audiovisual Material Series; and the Miscellaneous Papers Series.

Farrar, Straus & Giroux, Inc. records 1899-2003 1945-1989
The publishing company Farrar, Straus & Giroux, Inc. was founded in 1945 as Farrar, Straus & Company by John Farrar and Roger W. Straus, Jr. After numerous changes in management and corresponding changes in name, the company became known as Farrar, Straus & Giroux, Inc. (FSG) in 1964 when Robert Giroux became editor-in-chief. The company firmly established itself as a quality publisher in the 1960s and 1970s. FSG remained staunchly independent of conglomerate publishing for many years. Even after selling controlling interest to the German publisher Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck in 1994, FSG maintained much of the freedom of an independent publishing house.

Title:
William Kennedy Papers, 1926-2003.
The William Kennedy Papers document nearly a half century of research, writing and publishing efforts of the internationally recognized, Pulitzer prize winning author, playwright, essayist, journalist, script writer, professor and champion of the arts. Born and raised in Albany, New York, Kennedy's novels and nonfiction works frequently evoke a strong sense of place in the state capital, centering upon the city, its history, and its people in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The collection features records related to all of Kennedy's fiction and nonfiction books through 2002 plus essays and newspaper articles from the Albany Times-Union. All files chronicle Kennedy's meticulous research, writing, publishing and promotion processes, and feature proposals, numerous drafts with edits, rewrites, galleys, page proofs, correspondence, reviews, and interviews. The Kennedy Papers chart the transformation of his novels to film. Relevant papers including working drafts, shooting scripts, looping and line scripts, production notes, call sheets, shooting schedules, and cast lists. Kennedy's correspondence files demonstrate his significant role in late twentieth and early twenty-first century American literature. Letters detail his close friendships with fellow authors, most notably mentor Saul Bellow and Hunter S. Thompson, as well as John Cheever, Frank McCourt, Joyce Carol Oates, and Philip Roth.
